A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily ,New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,197.73 down 43.9 or 0.33% from Monday's close of 13,080.73. For the year the Dow is up 8.02%. Of the 30 Dow components 7 gained, Intel was unchanged and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was McDonald's MCD $97.34 +0.37 0.38% 4,864,242 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $22.5 +0.34 1.53% 61,120,604 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Verizon VZ $38.66 -0.67 1.7% 21,620,809 Dual Listed and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $9.6 -0.33 3.32% 247,887,278 NYSE.

WSJ pC4 "Dow loses 43.90 in a late decline" by Matt Zarzemsky says stocks edged lower as consumer confidence and home price data met economists' expectations but failed to excite investors.

Fin Times p22 "Lennar lays the foundation for strong gains by homebuilders" by Arash Massoudi says sahres in homebuilders reached their highest levels since Sept '08 as investor confidence in a housing market recovery was boosted by economic data & strong earnings results from Lennar. Pfizer rose 1.5% after a Goldman Sachs note said it will considering separations beyond Animal Health and Nutrition. Bank of America dropped as it was downgraded by Baird analysts.

USA Today p4B "Stocks fall despite positive consumer confidence report" by Bloomberg says stocks retreated Tues as a report showing American consumer confidence near the strongest level in a year failed to encourage investors.

NYT pB8 "Shares slip as big quarter approaches finish line" by Reuters says stocks retreated on Tues but a batch of large cap shares touched new highs with the help of portfolio managers buying top performers near the end of the quarter. Bank of America is the 2nd best performing S&P stock for the quarter, up 75%.

Inv. Daily pA1 "Indexes sink late, but leaders hold firm" by Vic Reklaitis says stocks slumped into the close to end lower Tues but largely held onto the bulk of Mon's strong gains as the action was down in mixed volume and the outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 1477 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.82 (year ago it was 14.82); today's P/E estimate is 12.65 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.65 (year ago it was 12.63) and today's dividend yield is 2.48 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,743.80 down 5.81 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,749.61. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.13 down $0.19 from Monday's average closing price of $58.32. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.68 (DD/HD) down $0.01 from Monday's median closing price of $51.69. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $89.14 -0.02 0.02% 2,305,283 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.6 -0.33 3.32% 247,887,278 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $581 ($174,961 - $174,380).

MarketWatch Tuesday 3/27/12 4:59 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks slid Tuesday as Wall Street offered muted reaction to the day’s economic data and took a break after the past months’ rally.
“I don’t think you can make anything too much out of today, it’s kind of a pause,” said Ken Tower, senior analyst at Quantitative Analysis Service Inc. “When the euro zone averted a collapse, we went into a period of stability, which we didn’t fully appreciate towards the end of last year. What we’ve seen in the last couple of months is people who were under invested trying to catch up, and certainly some end-of-quarter window dressing,” Tower added. Up 8% year-to-date, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.33% fell 43.90 points, or 0.3%, to 13,197.73.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.28% ended down 3.99 points, or 0.3%, to 1,412.52, with financials down the most and utilities the best performing of its 10 sectors. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.07% lost 2.22 points, or 0.1%, to 3,120.35. Decliners ran just ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 730 million shares traded. NYSE composite volume was 3.5 billion and Nasdaq Composite volume was 1.7 billion. On Monday, stock indexes surged more than 1%, canceling last week’s losses and extending the quarter’s gains, after Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke said accommodative monetary policy continues to be warranted. Treasury prices rose with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR -2.75% , used in determining mortgages and other consumer loans, falling to 2.184%. Oil rose, with the futures contract for May delivery CLK2 -0.22% gaining 30 cents to end at $107.33 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold declined GCJ2 -0.33% 70 cents to $1,684.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the NYSE. Read more on oil futures. The Conference Board’s confidence index fell to 70.2 in March from a revised 71.6 reading the prior month. “Bottom line, confidence remains above 70 for a second straight month and is well off the low seen in February ‘09 of 25.3 but is still below the 10-year average of 79.2,” emailed Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. Ahead of Wall Street’s open, data showed home prices in 20 major U.S. metropolitan areas falling at a slower rate in January, illustrating stabilization in the housing market. Home builder Lennar Corp. LEN +4.66% rallied 4.7% after better-than-anticipated earnings. Shares of Walgreen Co. WAG +1.25% also gained after the drugstore chain reported second-quarter profit that beat Wall Street’s expectations.
