Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,743.33 up 2.17 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,741.16. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.11 up $0.07 from Tuesday's average closing price of $58.04. MarketWatch Wednesday 3/14/12 4:09 pm by Myra P. Saefong says the Dow Jones Industrial Average extended its winning streak to a sixth-consecutive session on Wednesday, finding support from largely positive bank stress tests, but the S&P 500 Index failed to shake off weakness by the close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.13% rose 16.42 points, or 0.1%, to close at 13,194.10. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.03% edged up by 0.85 point to 3,040.73. The S&P 500 SPX -0.12% lost 1.67 points, or 0.1%, to end at 1,394.28. "The fact that 15 of the most important of the Fed's children 'passed' the hypothetical stress test, along with 'hopeful' signs that the economy may be improving led to a buying spurt at the market's close," said Robert Barone, a portfolio manager and partner at Universal Value Advisors in Reno, Nev. "Yet, trading volume remains low, indicating a lack of strong conviction. Suspicions linger regarding the health of the U.S. and world economies."

The Nasdaq surged 1.9% to its first close above 3000 since late 2000. The Commerce Dept said retail sales gained 1.1% in Feb over Jan. MarketWatch Tuesday 3/13/12 4:42 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks leapt Tuesday, with the Nasdaq Composite finishing above 3,000 for the first time in 11 years, after J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. hiked its dividend, retail sales climbed and the Federal Reserve held rates at record lows. “You don’t want to fight the Feds,” Nick Raich, director of research at Key Private Bank in Cleveland, said of the coordinated actions by the U.S. Federal Reserve and its counterparts overseas.
The Federal Reserve, as expected, keeps its interest rate target between 0% and 0.25% and says a rise in oil and gasoline prices will only "temporarily" push up inflation. “It’s been across the globe, the rally, and a lot of it has to do with the over $6 trillion in stimulus being pumped into the economy,” Raich added.
“We avoided a major banking crisis in Europe, and central banks are doing all they can to reinflate the economy and prop up stock prices,” Raich said. “Today’s news by and large was positive. This economy is still picking up steam,” said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel. Reclaiming its perch above 13,000, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.68% rose 217.97 points, or 1.7%, at 13,177.68, its biggest single-day jump since Dec. 20, 2011, and its highest level since Dec. 31, 2007. The Dow last closed above 13,000 on Feb. 28, its first finish above that level since the middle of 2008. J.P. Morgan Chase JPM -0.62% led blue-chip gains, up 7% after the bank said it would hike its quarterly dividend and repurchase $15 billion of its stock by the end of the first quarter 2013. The S&P 500 Index SPX +1.81% added 24.87 points, or 1.8%, to 1,395.96, with financial companies rallying the hardest among its 10 sectors. Even with Nasdaq above 3,000, the market will likely remain cautious and most leading tech-sector stocks will rise slowly, says tech commentator John C. Dvorak. Also topping a psychological milestone, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.88% climbed 56.22 points, or 1.9%, to 3,039.88, its highest level since Nov. 15, 2000.The Nasdaq cleared 3,000 on Feb. 29, but failed to retain the level through the close. That last occurred Dec. 11, 2000. The Nasdaq hit its all-time high of 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000. Apple Inc. AAPL +0.05% shares, the biggest Nasdaq component, hit a record $568.18, and finished at $568.10, up 2.9%, after Jefferies raised its price target on the technology company and research group IDC hiked its outlook for table computer shipments for 2012.
For every stock falling more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 907 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.3 billion. “I don’t know what to make of the low volume, maybe institutions are fully invested and we have not successfully gotten retail investors back into the stock market,” said Tuz.
The dollar climbed against the euro EURUSD -0.07% and the yen USDJPY +0.05% , while bond prices fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR +0.42% rising to 2.08%. The price of crude wavered between gains and losses, with oil futures for April delivery CLJ2 +0.10% closing up 37 cents at $106.71 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. As expected, the central bank kept interest rates at record lows and said it would continue its program of swapping short-term for longer-term Treasurys. “They are in a balancing act between some signs of economic growth, chiefly better employment numbers, against rising gas and food prices, so it’s steady as she goes until the next meeting,” said Tuz at Chase Investment Counsel. The Commerce Department reported retail sales climbed 1.1% to $407.8 billion in February, while the prior two months were revised higher. The rising sales were pretty impressive in that rising gas prices haven’t hurt the consumer,” said Raich at Key Private Bank. The upward revisions imply first-quarter economic growth could be “a bit stronger” than first estimated, noted Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC in New York.
