Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,907.94 up 70.61 or 0.55% from Wednesday's close of 12,837.33. For the year the Dow is up 5.65%. As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.44 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.37 (year ago it was 14.84); Friday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.79) and today's dividend yield is 2.52 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.54 (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,705.51 up 9.83 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,696.18. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.85 up $0.31 from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.54. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.46 (DD/HD)up $0.85 from Wednesday's median closing price of $48.81. If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $983 ($170,551 = $169,618).

MarketWatch Thursday 3/8/12 4:10 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks Thursday extended gains into a second session as reports signaled enough Greek-bond holders had agreed to tender their debt for new Greek bonds, removing the last big obstacle to Greece's second bailout package. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.18% rose 34.73 points, or 1.2%, to 2,970.42.
