Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,962.81 down 14.76 or 0.11% from Friday's close of 12,977.57. For the year the Dow is up 6.10%. WSJ pC4 "Stock rally can't undo early fall" by Christian Berthelsen says stocks bounced back from morning losses but still ended the day lower amid concerns about slowing global economic growth. The day's moves followed a recurring pattern lately with a sizable selloff early in the session followed by a long slow climb to near even throughout the rest of the day. At once point the Dow was down 94 points. Alcoa led the Dow lower as it fell 37 cents.

USA Today p4B "Markets slip on factory report, Cina's cut of growth target" by Bloomberg says stocks fell Mon, giving the S&P its biggest 2 day drop since Jan as China cut its economic growth target, and orders to American factories decreased for the first time in 3 months.

Fin Times p26 "Alpha Natural Resources and Freeport-McMorRan suffer falls" by Ajay Makan says US equities fell as China cut its growth forecast for the year, weighing on cyclical raw material stocks and miners in particular. Alcoa lost 3.6%, Caterpillar fell 2.1% and Dupont fell 1.1%.

NYT pB6 "Shares prices dip again as China cuts its forecast" by Reuters says stocks fell on Mon for the 2nd straight session and the 3rd in the last 4 trading days led by a drop in share prices for basic materials after China trimmed its '12 prediction for economic growth.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Major indexes retreat in mixed volume" by Vincent Mao says stocks fell Mon as overseas economic news offset some better than expected US data. China cut its economic growth forecast, while the euro zone purchasing managers index slipped. The Current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend. Leaders down in volume include Caterpillar. Caterpillar fell for the 4th straight session.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.51 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.52 (year ago it was 14.79); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.79) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.51 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,712.77 down 1.95 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,714.72. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.09 down $0.07 from Friday's average closing price of $57.16. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.14 (DD/HD)up $0.29 from Friday's median closing price of $49.43. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $87.06 -0.46 0.53% 2,698,512 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.97 -0.16 1.97% 195,304,171 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $195 ($171,472 - $171,277).

MarketWatch Monday 3/5/12 4:11 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Monday, hamstrung by a lowered economic growth target in China, contracting euro-zone business activity and some weak elements in a gauge of the U.S. services sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.11% ended down 14.76 points, or 0.1%, at 12,962.81. The S&P 500 SPX -0.39% fell 5.3 points, or 0.4%, to 1,364.33.
