WSJ pC1 "Dow's steady streak ends" by E.S. Browning says 3 months of steady stock market gains halted Tues as investors wrung their hands over the prospect Greece is likely to invoke a law forcing unwilling investors to accept the terms of its debt restructuring.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks hammered; some leaders hit" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks on Tues suffered their worst losses so far in '12, swooning on bad news overseas. The action was down sharply in higher volume while the current outlook is an confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB7 "Shares dive on concern about global economy" by AP says stocks suffeed their biggest losses in 3 months, the first interruption in a steady rally that has started the year, amid worries about the global economy & Greece's ability to pressure the last investors to sign on for its bailout.

Fin Times p24 "Fin'ls and ind'ls suffer as S&P retreat accelerates" by Arash Massoudi says the S&P suffered its worst day in 3 months as investors worried about contagion from the eurozone. Bank of America dropped below $8.

USA Today p4B "Greek debt, Europe recession worries send stocks tumbling" by Bloomberg says stocks slumped Tues sending the S&P to its biggest decline this year, as concern grew about the success of a Greece debt deal and after a report showed that the European economy contracted.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.28 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.51(year ago it was 14.69); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.79) and today's dividend yield is 2.55 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.41). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,685.86 down 26.91 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,712.77. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.20 down $0.89 from Monday's average closing price of $57.09. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.21 (DD/HD)up $0.93 from Monday's median closing price of $49.14. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $
$84.95 -2.11 2.42% 3,503,525 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.71 -0.26 3.26% 256,917,555 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,691 ($171,277 - $168,586).

MarketWatch Tuesday 3/6/12 4:13 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks dove Tuesday, suffering their worst one-day loss this year, as fears of an abrupt, damaging Greek debt default resurfaced amid speculation Greek bondholders would avoid a planned debt restructuring. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.57% fell 203.66 points, or 1.6%, to 12,759.15, its first loss of more than 200 points since November 23. The S&P 500 SPX -1.54% lost 20.97 points, or 1.5%, to 1,343.36, led by 2% declines in financials and industrial stocks. The Nasdaq omposite COMP -1.36% lost 40.16 points, or 1.4%, to 2,910.32. "Investors are paying a little more attention to the risk side of the market now that the market has made a nice move off its [October] lows," said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors.
