A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Monday's Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of Wall Street Journal & Financial Times, Sundays & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,810.54 up 47.23 or 0.37% from Thursday's close of 12,763.31. For the week the Dow was up 2.4% and for the month up 3.3%. For the year the Dow is up 10.65%. Of the 30 Dow components 18 gained, Kraft was unchanged and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $115.45 +2.81 2.49% 11,144,174 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft MSFT $25.92 -0.79 2.96% 260,293,973 NASDAQ-GS.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks tack on gains in rising volume" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted small gains Fri, wrapping up a second positive week in a row. Friday's action was up in higher volume with the current outlook being a confirmed uptrend. Caterpillar was the lead listed in "Leaders up in volume".

Sat WSJ pA1 "April is a kindly month for stocks" by Jonathan Cheng says stocks had their best month of year in April, as strong corp earnings and the promise of continued low interest rates persuaded investors to make risky bets on small firm shares and volatile commodities.

Sat NYT pB7 "Market ends the week with momentum" by Christine Hauser says strong corp earnings, especially in the energy sector, lifted major stock indexes to 3 year highs on Fri. Microsoft was down by 2.96%.

Fin Times p14 "Caterpillar puts seal on week of bumper earnings" by Michael Stothard says large US indices hit multi-year highs this week after a number of bumper quarterly earnings reports & a well received statement on monetary policy from the Fed Res. Strong results from Caterpillar outweighed mixed results elsewhere. Microsoft lost 3% after reporting that rev from its Windows operating system had suffered a rare slip. It was the first quarter in more than 2 decades in which its profits had fallen below those of Apple. Merck was up 0.5% after reporting a tripling of its 1Q net income, while Chevron added 0.6% after announcing that its earnings were up 36% due to higher oil prices. Procter & Gamble & Boeing also reported healthy earnings and their stocks were up 2.6% & 5.7% over the past 5 days.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.53 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 14.95 (year ago it was 16.21); the P/E estimate is 12.91 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.68 (year ago it was 13.95), and the dividend yield is 2.30 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.31 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,692.65 up 6.24 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,686.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.42 up 0.21 from Thursday's average closing price of $56.21. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.38 (AXP/JPM) up 0.19 from Thursday's median closing price of $47.19. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $63.28 +0.22 0.35% 2,444,231 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.3 -0.12 0.97% 66,096,631 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $624 ($169,265 - $168,641).
