MarketWatch Monday 5/16/11 4:16 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks closed moderately lower Monday, with tech stocks suffering the most. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 47.38 points, or 0.4%, to 12,548.37, with percentage losers led by Microsoft Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc. The S&P 500 lost 8.3 points, or 0.6%, to 1,329.47, with a 1.5% retreat in the tech sector weighing the most. The Nasdaq Composite fell 46.16 points, or 1.6%, to 2,782.31. Weak economic data and simmering worries about the European debt situation, combined with a lack of catalysts ahead of the typical slow summer trading months, kept investors on the sidelines, analysts said.

MarketWatch Friday 5/13/11 4:47 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks finished lower Friday, pulling the Dow Jones Industrial Average into negative territory for the week, as investors fretted about the recovery and a week of upheaval in commodities.
“There’s a lot of question marks to the economic recovery at the same time the Fed is about to take [quantitative easing two] away, and just like with any drug addict, there’s a period of withdrawal,” said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.79% shed 100.17 points to close at 12,595.75, pulling the blue-chip index 0.3% lower for the week. Also lapsing into the red from last Friday’s close, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index SPX -0.81% declined 10.88 points to end at 1,337.77, with financial companies faring worst among the benchmark’s 10 industry groups. The index lost 0.2% for the week.
Retaining a modest 0.03% weekly gain, the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -1.21% fell 34.57 points to end at 2,828.47. “Now that earnings season is behind us, there is currently no good news to push stocks higher until we start to get the next quarter’s expectations, which should be very good,” said Keith Springer, president of Springer Financial Advisors. For every stock that rose Friday, more than two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 898 million shares had traded by the close of the trading session. The CBOE Volatility index VIX +6.49% gained 6.6% to close at 17.09. Yahoo shares slide after the company said Alibaba had secretly transferred ownership of an online-payment unit to a separate entity. Alibaba disputes the claim. The German newspaper Die Welt reported the European Commission, International Monetary Fund and Germany were backing a Greek debt extension while the European Central Bank and France were opposing it. “It makes sense, the Germans want to stop fronting Greece money and it gives Greece more breathing room, and because the principal would get paid back, banks won’t have to mark the debt down,” said Boockvar at Miller Tabak. But the “lack of any consensus on how to deal with this is what is weighing on the euro,” Boockvar added. The euro fell to a six-week low against the dollar EURUSD -0.8498% , making dollar-denominated assets more costly for holders of other currencies. Reversing losses, crude-oil futures CLM11 +0.37% closed at $99.65 a barrel, up 68 cents, while gold futures GCM11 -0.84% declined $13.20 to finish at $1,493.60 an ounce. U.S. consumer prices increased 0.4% in April, according to the Labor Department. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, prices rose 0.2%. Read more about CPI data. While the government’s read on inflation “didn’t come in too high or too low as far as consensus, the public feels prices are much higher,” said Jay Suskind, a senior vice president at Duncan-Williams Inc. The market is on guard to see if the economy “is going to continue to slow down with higher prices and [quantitative easing] winding down, or does the economy pick up and call this a slow patch?” said Suskind. Shortly after Wall Street’s open, initial data showed consumer sentiment for May edging upward.
