Post No. 1,027 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 24, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 24, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investors' Business Daily, New York Times, USA Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,650.18 up 80.6 or 0.65% from Wednesday's close of 12,560.18. For the year the Dow is up 8.88%. Of the 30 Dow components 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainers dollar-wise were Chevron CVX $103.87 +1.01 0.98% 7,455,002 and McDonald's MCD $82.51 +1.01 1.24% 5,911,850 NYSE and percentage-wise was American Express AXP $51.82 +0.76 1.49% 6,947,862 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $36.13 -0.36 0.99% 31,162,102 NYSE and percentage-wise was Intel INTC $23.54 -0.34 1.42% 98,356,453 NASDAQ-GS.

WSJ pC5 "Two in a row for Dow as AmEx leads way" by Brendan Conway says major stock indexes staged their 2nd straight gain as a doubling in LinkdIn's share price spurred hopes that ipo's can lure more investors into risk assets. The Dow was led by American Express which added 76 cents & McDonald's which gain 1.01. Intel dropped 34 cents after Goldman Sachs stock analysts downgraded it to Sell and lowered ratings on other chip equipment stocks, citing potential excess supply. Hewlett-Packard fell 36 cents.

Fin Times p22 "Mixed jobs & manufacturing data offset LinkedIn debut surge" by Michael Stothard says shares in LinkedIn more than doubled on their first day of trading following the firm's ipo, while the wider markets edged a little higher after a mixed set of data on US employment & manufacturing.

Investor's Business Daily pA1 "Stocks post small gains in slow trade" by Paul Whitfield says stocks spent another quiet session strolling to small gain. Thursday's action was up in slower trade while the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

NYT pB10 "Investors get a lift from LinkedIn debut" by AP says the biggest Internet stock offering since Google combined with a drop in oil prices to send the braod stock market higher.

USA Today p4B "Jobless claims fall, stocks rise on uptick in investor optimism" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Thurs sending the S&P 500 index higher for a 2nd straight day.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E is 14.36 up from Thursday's trailing P/E of 14.31 (year ago it was 14.64); the P/E estimate is 12.74 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.74 (year ago it was 13.10), and the dividend yield is 2.36 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.7462). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,665.54 up 5.97 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,659.57. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.52 up 0.30 from Wednesday's average closing price of $55.32. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.70 (AXP/JPM) up 0.15 from Wednesday's median closing price of $47.55. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $62.81 -0.19 0.3% 2,034,742 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.69 -0.10 0.85% 121,097,815 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $597 ($166,553 - $165,957).

MarketWatch Thursday 5/19/11 4:19 pm by Rex Crum says US stocks indexes closed with gains Thursday on a day highlighted by the initial public offering of LinkedIn Corp. which more-than-doubled to close at $94.25 a share. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.30% rose 8.3 points to 2,823, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed by 45 points to close at 12,605.
