The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,394.66 up 38.45 or 0.31% from Tuesday's close of 12,356.21. Of the 30 Dow components 18 gained and 12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $103.29 +1.74 1.71% 5,744,856 NYSE and percentage-wise was DuPont DD $52.14 +0.89 1.74% 5,719,399 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble PG $66.38 -0.63 0.94% 11,414,562 NYSE and percentage-wise was Verizon VZ $36.4 -0.50 1.36% 13,700,162 Dual Listed.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E is 14.06 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 14.09 (year ago it was 14.60); today's P/E estimate is 12.62 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.62 (year ago it was 12.45), and today's dividend yield is 2.41 up from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.40 (last year it was 2.74). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct6 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,637.70 up 5.28 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,632.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.59 up 0.17 from Tuesday's average closing price of $54.42. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.34 (AXP/JPM) down 0.07 from Tuesday's median closing price of $46.41. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.69 +0.72 0.78% 2,754,588 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.395 -0.065 0.57% 94,099,225 NYSE.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 38.45 points, or 0.3%, to 12,394.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 4.19 points, or 0.3%, to 1,320.47, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 15.22 points, or 0.6%, to 2,761.38.

Fin Times p22 "AutoZone motors ahead on strong earnings but sentiment stays flat" by Michael Stothard says shares in AutoZone jumped after it reported better than expected quarterly earnings but the wider markets were broadly flat as investors remained wary following the sharp sell off in the prior session.

USA Today p4B "European economic worries continue to pull stocks lower" by AP says continued worries about Europe's debt crisis overshadowed a small rebound in oil prices and pushed stocks lower on Tues.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,632.62 down 3.54 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,635.92. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.42 down 0.11 from Monday's average closing price of $54.53. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.41 (AXP/JPM) up 0.13 from Monday's median closing price of $46.28. MarketWatch Tuesday 5/24/11 4:10 pm by Claudia Assis says US stocks declined modestly Tuesday, with major stock indexes ending at their lowest since April 19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 25 points, or 0.2%, to 12,356. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.5% to 2,746, also at its lowest since April 19. The S&P 500 turned lower on the last stretch of trading, ending off 0.1% to 1,316. A Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond survey showing a lull in regional manufacturing contributed to the declines, as it came after softer-than-expected manufacturing surveys in the New York and Philadelphia regions.
