Post No. 1,001 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 24, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 24, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily's, USA Today, New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report - Ga. Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,807.51 up 0.51 or 0.0% from Monday's close of 12,807.36. Of the 30 Dow components 19 gained, Home Depot was unchanged and 10 declined. For the year the Dow is up 10.62%. WSJ pC5 "Pfizer drags on Blue Chips" by Jonathan Cheng says blue chip stocks finished virtually unchanged as investors dumped energy & materials stocks & headed for the safety of bonds & telecoms. Pfizer was the biggest decliner on the Dow slumping 58 cents after it topped earnings expectations but reported rev that fell shy of analysts' views. Energy stocks also weighed on the market as crude oil tumbled to $111.05 a barrel. Chevron fell $2.01 and Exxon shed $1.35. AT&T gained 2.1%. Bank of America gained 26 cents while Alcoa was up 45 cents on rumors that Rio Tinto could make a bid for it.

Fin Times p22 "Pfizer loses ground as rev miss weighs on healtcare sector" by Michael Stothard says shares in Pfizer slipped after its 1Q rev fell short of expectations weighing on the healthcare sector & helping to lead the wider markets lower for the 2nd consecutive session.

NYT pB9 "Weak earnings deflate Wall St rally" by Ap says after 2 weeks of strong earnings pumped up the markets, weak results from Pfizer & others deflated a broad earnings rally on Tues at least for one day. Pfizer posted lower thane expected quarterly results, overshadowing a recent parade of positive corp reports.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Bad day for stock indexes turns nastier for leaders" by David Saito-Chung says the major indexes pulled back for a 2nd straight day Tues but cut their losses late in the session. Most of the market leaders got thumped hard. Tuesday's action was broad losses, higher trade while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

USA Today p4B "Stocks retreat as commodity prices fall" by Bloomberg says most stocks fell for a 2nd day as commodity shares slid & Sears led retailers lower after losing money in 1Q. Bank of America & JPMorgan rose 26 cents and 74 cents respectively.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.53 unchanged from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 14.53 (year ago it was 16.09); the P/E estimate is 12.91 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.91 (year ago it was 13.95), and the dividend yield is 2.30 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.30 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,692.25 up 0.03 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,692.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.41 unchanged from Monday's average closing price of $56.41. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.91 (AXP/JPM) up 0.49 from Monday's median closing price of $47.42. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $64.05 +0.53 0.83% 2,838,311 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.6 +0.26 2.11% 145,585,444 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have broken even ($169,232 - $169m232).

MarketWatch Tuesday 5/3/11 5:08 pm by Jonathan Cheng says blue chip stocks eked out a tiny gain Tuesday, outflanking losses on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, as investors dumped energy and materials stocks and headed for the safety of bonds and telecommunications companies. Gold is suffering from a lack of cash coming off the sidelines, and some investors are ready to jump ship from the yellow metal at the first sign of trouble, according to MarketWatch columnist Mark Hulbert. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.00% finished higher by just 0.15 point, or 0.00%, to 12,807.51. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index SPX -0.34% shed 4.60 points, or 0.34%, to 1,356.62. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.78% declined 22.46 points, or 0.78%, to 2,841.62. Pfizer Inc. PFE -0.05% shares were the biggest decliner on the Dow, slumping 2.8% after the pharmaceutical company topped earnings expectations but reported revenue that fell shy of analysts’ views. Energy stocks also weighed on the market as crude oil tumbled 2.2% to $111.05 a barrel. Chevron Corp. CVX -0.16% shares fell 1.9%, and Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM -0.43% shed 1.6%. Pulling on the upside were telecommunications stocks, after MetroPCS Communications’s PCS +0.28% first-quarter earnings more than doubled, thanks to the best-ever quarter for customer additions at the prepaid wireless provider. MetroPCS shares surged 10%, while AT&T Corp. T +0.06% gained 2.1%. Utilities stocks also were strong on a day that saw investors rotate into perceived safety shelters, including Treasury bonds. As investors snapped up Treasurys, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note UST10Y +0.06% fell to a seven-week low of 3.257%. Read more on Treasury bonds. “What’s really interesting is we’re seeing investors shift to more of a defensive stand -- the 10-year bond yield is falling, and people are putting more into bonds and higher-yielding stocks like utilities and telecoms,” said Kate Warne, market strategist for brokerage firm Edward Jones in St. Louis. “We’re seeing a bit of wait-and-see approach: where can I get yield, where can I get less exposure from the metals and the things that have been doing well lately?” Also adding to the gains were bank shares, with Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.24% surging 2.1%. Alcoa, Inc. AA +0.74% gained 2.6% on rumors that Rio Tinto RIO -0.17% could make a bid for the aluminum maker. Both companies declined to comment. Mastercard MA +0.14% rose 2.6% as the card company’s first-quarter profit rose, topping analysts’ expectations. Revenue also beat views. Avon Products AVP +0.39% surged 4.5% after first-quarter earnings more than tripled on improved margins and lower advertising costs, beating analysts’ estimates. Computer Sciences CSC +0.61% tumbled 13% after the provider of information-technology services again lowered its outlook for the year, citing a reduction in contract profit. Sears Holdings SHLD -9.86% shares fell 9.9% after the retailer predicted it would post a loss in its fiscal first quarter, forecasting a loss of $1.35 to $1.81 a share after previously calling for a 14-cent-a-share gain. General Motors GM +0.18% rose 2.5% after the company’s U.S. auto sales jumped in April on strong demand for its passenger cars as buyers shifted to more fuel-efficient vehicles. Ford Motor Co. F -0.45% shares edged down 0.5% after the automaker said light-vehicle sales rose 16%. Read more on GM, Ford car sales.
Investors took cheer in a surprise jump in factory orders, which climbed for the fifth consecutive month in March after the previous month’s numbers were revised sharply upward. Capital spending by businesses also surged as manufacturers sold to overseas markets amid weakness in the dollar. The dollar continued to weaken against the euro USDEUR +0.0445% and the yen USDYEN -0.0988% , though it was up sharply against the British pound GBPUSD -0.1153% . Silver SIN11 -3.37% tumbled 7.6%, while gold futures GCM11 -0.56% fell 1.1%. In overseas markets, Asian bourses finished mostly lower and Indian stocks tumbled after the country’s central bank raised interest rates more than expected. European markets declined with broad losses among car makers and amid renewed worries about European sovereign debt.
