Banks bucked the falling market, helped by improving eurozone sentiment. Bank of America rose 0.9%
NYT pB9 "equities end a strong month on a mixed note" by Reuters says Wall St closed a strong month narrowly mixed on Tues as weaker thane expected economic reports surprised investors after a stream of positive data in recent months. Results from Pfizer & Lilly both topped expectations but Pfizer trimmed its '12 outlook and it dipped 0.8%.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.99 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.01 (year ago it was 14.50); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.15 (year ago it was 12.63), and today's dividend yield is 2.54 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.53 (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,669.18 down 2.75 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,671.93. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.64 down $0.09 from Monday's average closing price of $55.73. If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $275 ($167,193 - $166,918).
MarketWatch Tuesday 1/31/12 4:10 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Tuesday closed the books on Wall Street's best January in more than a decade, with the indexes mostly slipping after U.S. economic data failed to live up to its billing.
