Post No. 1,493 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal and Financial Times, and Sunday's and Saturday's Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,982.95 down 1.74 or 0.01% from Thursday's close of 12,984.69. For the week the Dow is up 33.08 points or 0.025% from last Friday's close of 12,949.87. For the year the Dow is up 6.26%. Of the 30 Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $109.08 +0.73 0.67% 5,821,425 NYSE and percentage-wise was American Express AXP $53.33 +0.66 1.25%4,927,691 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Johnson & Johnson JNJ $64.46 -0.64 0.98%10,434,191 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $7.88 -0.14 1.75% 161,679,335 NYSE.
WSJ pB4 "S&P inches up to multiyear high" by Chris Dieterich says the S&P squeaked out its highest close since '08 as most stocks traded higher after better than expected reports on home sales and consumer sentiments. Tech and utility stocks led the advance while fin'l stocks lagged behind. American Express topped the Dow up 66 cents while Bank of America fell 14 cents. Walmart sank 5.9% this week in the wake of disappointing results.
Sat NYT pB1 "Caution sets in as indexes hit feel good heights" by Christine hauser says the S&P closed Fri at its highest level since '08 while the Dow briefly cracked the psychological barrier of 13,000 last surpassed in spring '08 but didn't manage to end the session above that. it took the Japanese banks years to recapitalize while the US did it very rapidly and there was massive dilution. Bank of America traded at more than $35 a share as late as mid '08 and is well below that.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks show bullish signs despite day of slow trade" by Paul Whitfield says stocks chalked up mostly minor gains Fri in sleepy volume. Friday's action was mostly up in lower trade as the current outlook is still in a confirmed uptrend.
As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.53 unchanged from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 14.74); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.45 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 12.87) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,715.43 down 0.23 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,715.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.18 down $0.01 from Thursday's average closing price of $57.19. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.99 (DD/HD)down $0.17 from Thursday's median closing price of $49.16. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58. 6 -0.36 0.61% 2,147,551 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.88 -0.14 1.75% 161,679,335 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $23 ($171,566 - $171,543).
MarketWatch Friday 2/24/12 4:09 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Friday veered nearly unchanged to tally weekly gains that had the S&P 500 closing at its highest level since June 2008. Another round of better-than-expected reports on consumer confidence and housing offset worries about crude oil's CLJ2 +1.73% rise above $109 a barrel. "The market has rallied in the face" of rising energy prices, said David Rolfe, chief investment officer at Wedgewood Partners in St. Louis, Mo. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.01% fell nearly 2 points to end at 12,982.95, leaving it up 0.3% for the week. The S&P 500 SPX +0.17% rose 2.28 points, or 0.2%, to 1,365.74, also gaining 0.3% from the week-ago close.
