Post No. 1,464 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,883.95 up 5.75 or 0.04% from Tuesday's close of 12,878.2. Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained, 2 were unchanged and 13 declined. As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.40 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.15 (year ago it was 15.23); today's P/E estimate is 12.30 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.30 (year ago it was 12.64) and today's dividend yield is 2.49 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.36). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,702.35 up 0.76 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,701.59. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.74 up $0.02 from Tuesday's average closing price of $56.72. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.41 (AXP/HD) down $0.13 from Tuesday's median closing price of $48.54. The lowest volume was 3M MMM
$87.97 +0.08 0.09% 2,513,445 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.13 +0.28 3.57% 424,896,414 NYSE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $76 ($170,235 - $170,159).
MarketWatch Wednesday 2/8/12 4:41 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended with mild gains on Wednesday after a news report that Greece had drafted a new financing deal with the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
“The issue we’ve been dealing with for weeks is when do we get something signed, sealed and delivered,” David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds, said of the market’s muted reaction. “We continue to get assured by people in Europe that a deal will get done, so to some extend a deal is already priced into the market.” Greece will commit to permanent spending cuts that include reduced pension payments and a 20% cut in the minimum wage, according to a letter of intent obtained by Bloomberg News.
Any deal in the works is a “euphemism for default. The tragedy of this is Europe continues to insist on short-term austerity, which only makes the Greek economy worse,” said Kelly, arguing Europe at large would reap far greater economic good by offering aid in the form of an outright grant to jump-start the Greek and other peripheral European economies. After veering between gains and losses, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.04% finished with a 5.75-point gain at 12,883.95. The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.22% added 2.91 points, or 0.2%, to 1,349.96, with financial firms performing best and energy the worst among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.41% rose 11.78 points, or 0.4%, to 2,915.86. For every three stocks falling four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 765 million. Composite volume neared 4.1 billion.
Caesars Entertainment Corp. CZR +71.00% nearly doubled in its trading debut, with shares of the casino chain up 71% to $15.39 apiece. “There is a huge amount of money sitting on the sidelines, 10-year Treasury yields are low and unattractive, so investors ought to be moving some money into equities, so it’s a slow march upward as investors gradually become less nervous,” said Kelly of the lackluster trading volume. Oil prices trimmed their rise after the U.S. Energy Department reported supplies rose last week, with the crude-futures contract for March delivery CL2H +0.71% adding 30 cents to $98.71 a barrel. The euro erased a gain versus the dollar EURUSD +0.00% to trade nearly unchanged at $1.3262 on concern that Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and coalition party leaders might not come to terms necessary for another round of rescue funds. The ECB is ready to exchange its holdings of Greek government bonds to help reduce Greek’s debt load, people briefed on the matter told Dow Jones on Tuesday. Treasury prices were near neutral after the government sold $24 billion of 10-year notes, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR +0.56% at 1.977%. Gold lost ground after rising 1.4% the prior session, with futures for April delivery /quotes/zigman/660065 GC2J -0.70% off $17.10, or 1%, to settle at $1,731.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. “I guess we’re waiting for Greek haircuts. We don’t have any economic news to speak of, and we’re at the last vestiges of earnings,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago. “Without data, people go on emotions.”

USA Today p5B "Progress in Greece nudge US markets to gains" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Tues sending the Dow to its highest since May '08 as Greece made progress on measures to secure int'l aid. Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Market shakes off losses to close up: volume rises" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks fought back from early losses to finish modestly higher Tes closing near the day's peaks for the 3rd session in a row.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,701.59 up 4.37 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,697.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. MarketWatch Tuesday 2/7/12 4:52 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose Tuesday, sending the Dow industrials to their highest close since 2008, as Greece reportedly neared accord on budget cuts, job openings rose in America and the Federal Reserve kept to its low-rate stance. “The market is mostly trading on news regarding Greek sovereign debt; maybe we can put one more issue behind us,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. Also, a Labor Department report had job openings rising to 3.38 million in December from 3.12 million the month before, showing “continued progress in the labor market,” said Luschini.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.26% rose 33.07 points, or 0.3%, to 12,878.20, its highest close since May 19, 2008. It had reversed higher early in the session after falling as much as 62.56 points. “We opened on the back of declining European equities, so that’s the bias the market took on the open, that whatever had rattled Europe would carry over, but now a final draft is seemingly moments away, so the market is more inclined than not to treat it as good news,” said Janney Montgomery Scott’s Luschini of the market’s about face. In Athens, government officials reportedly have a draft deal to present to Greek party leaders on Wednesday detailing another bailout. In Washington, top U.S. central banker Ben Bernanke reiterated his call on lawmakers to cut the nation’s long-term red ink, and repeated that the labor market is a long ways from returning to good health.
Bernanke, who also took questions from lawmakers, did make the comment that there is “still a lot of underlying weakness in the labor market, and the Fed is not ignoring that prospect, which keeps hope of QE3 alive,” said Luschini of prospects of a third round of quantitative easing by the central bank. “There’s nothing going on this week, so people are reaching for a catalyst. Plus, [Federal Reserve Chairman] Bernanke said that not withstanding the jobs number on Friday, we’re going to remain accommodative,” said Art Hogan, a strategist at Lazard Capital Markets. “The punch bowl is still on the table.” On the Dow, 20 of 30 components rose, led by a 1.4% gain in McDonald’s Corp. MCD -0.01% Helping lift the blue-chip index, Coca-Cola Co. KO +0.76% shares climbed 0.8% after the beverage maker reported adjusted fourth-quarter results that topped consensus expectations.
Boeing Co. BA +0.04% shares were down for a second day, off 0.3%, on the heels of production delays reported due to a structural fix needed in some of its 787s.
The S&P 500 index SPX +0.20% gained 2.72 points, or 0.2%, to 1,347.05, with utilities leading the gains and natural-resource stocks the greatest laggard among its sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.07% advanced 2.09 points, or 0.1%, to 2,904.08. For every 13 stocks falling, 17 gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 728 million shares traded. NYSE composite volume was about 3.7 billion. Any selloff, regardless of how short or shallow, is being used as a buying opportunity, noted Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus.
“If feels like some money managers are still underinvested, while those shorting have to take them back when it doesn’t work. The march has become a little more rotational in recent days,” said Spar, who questioned whether the trend marked a prelude to a full-fledged correction. Moving average and other technical gauges are “all indicative of a market that seems stretched,” suggested Luschini at Janney Montgomery Scott. “When you’re up more than 7% the first five weeks of the year is probably not a sustainable pace,” he said, adding that a correction of between 3% and 5% is likely in order.
