Big names who plan to spin off a business this year include Kraft Foods, Abbot labs & McGraw-Hill.

Investors' Bus. Daily p1A "Major indexes end mixed as nasdaq falls modestly" by Paul Whitfield says stocks were mixed Fri as the S&P shed an old distribution day & the Nasdaq narrowly avoided adding one. As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.45 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.39 (year ago it was 15.18); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 12.35 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.87 (year ago it was 12.87) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.50 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.34). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,711.06 up 6.05 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,705.01. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.04 up $0.21 from Thursday's average closing price of $56.83. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.09 (DD/HD) up $0.86 from Thursday's median closing price of $48.23. MarketWatch Friday 2/17/12 4:16 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Friday closed with weekly gains, with investors hesitant ahead of the long holiday weekend that's expected to include some resolution on another round of financial aid to Greece. "The market is hanging in the balance of what goes on in Greece. We want to see that Greece will get its payment," said Nick Raich, director of research at Key Private Bank in Cleveland. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.35% rose 45.79 points, or 0.4%, to 12,949.87, its highest close since May 19, 2008. The blue chips gained 1.2% on the week.
