Post No. 1,490 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, Atlanta Journal Constitution, USA Today, Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg), yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,984.69 up 46.02 or 0.36% from Wednesday's close of 12,938.67. For the year the Dow is up 6.28%. Of the 30 Dow components 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $197.61 +3.74 1.93% 8,026,185 NYSE and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble PG $66.42 +1.98 3.07% 20,162,902 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $27.05 -1.89 6.53% 71,361,756 NYSE.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks grind higher" by Chris Berthelsen says stocks overcame early losses buoyed by economic data & strong performances from 2 stocks that helped pull by indexes: IBM and Sears. IBM's rise of $3.74 accounted for 62% of the Dow's performance. Hewlett-Packard lost $1.89 after its 4Q rev fell short of expectations & its 2Q earnings outlook was below estimates.

Fin Times p22 "Sears reports a loss but benefits from focus on restructuring plans" by AJay Makan says Sears was up despite a 4Q loss which was expected. Procter & Gamble investors responded positively as it bowed to analyst pressure to streamline by saying it would cut 5,700 jobs and $10 bil in costs over the next 4 years. Hewlett-Packard fell 6.5% due to a 7% fall in sales. CEO Meg Whitman said there would be a multi-year turnaround but analysts stressed the challenges.

NYT pB7 "Stability in jobless claims helps push markets higher" by AP says the Dow made another run at 13,000 but didn't quite get there. Investors were encouraged by more good job news but gains were limited by poor retailer results.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks post gains as volume picks up" by Paul Whitfield says stocks popped higher Thurs as volume ticked up on both major exchanges for the first time in a week. The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

USA Today p4B "Stocks gain on news about jobless claims, home prices" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Thurs sending the Dow to the highest level since may '08 as jobless claims & housing data beat projections. Procter & Gamble rallied the most in the Dow rising $1.98 after it said it would cut 5,700 jobs.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.53 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.42 (year ago it was 14.66); Friday's P/E estimate is 12.35 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 12.87) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,715.66 up 6.09 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,709.57. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.19 up $0.18 from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.99. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.16 (DD/HD)up $0.23 from Wednesday's median closing price of $48.93. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.96 0.02 0.03% 2,794,824 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.02 +0.07 0.88% 144,162,990 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $609 ($171,566 - $170,957).

MarketWatch Thursday 2/23/12 4:12 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed with broad gains Thursday, with the S&P 500 near a 10-month high, as reports underlining general improvement in the economy offset a disappointing outlook from Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ -6.53% . The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.36% rose 46.02 points, or 0.4%, to 12,984.69. The S&P 500 SPX +0.43% gained 5.80, or 0.4%, to 1,363.46, its highest since April 29. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.81% advanced 23.81 points, or 0.8%, to 2,956.98. U.S. data showed home prices climbed 0.7% in the final month of last year. And jobless claims last week held near a four-year low.
