Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,878.38 up 4.24 or 0.03% from Monday's close of 12,874.04. For the year the Dow is up 5.41%. WSJ pC4 "Stocks battles to end day flat" by Christian Berthelsen says stocks ended little changed after a volatile session in which the market flirted with its worst point decline of the year only to recover in the last half hour of trading due to disappointing retail sales data & uncertainty over resolution to Greece's debt problems. Bank of America was the Dow's biggest loser down 27 cents after it was downgraded to neutral from buy by Citigroup.
Fin Times p24 "Homebuilders knocked as Masco's lacklustre sales raise concerns" by Ajay Makan says shares in Masco plunged 12.1% due to a large 4Q loss. Bank of America fell 3.3% after Citigroup downgraded it saying that earnings headwinds would check a rally which has seen BofA shares climb 40% this year.
NYT pB8 "Hopes for Greek debt talks spur late rally" by Reuters says the stock market rallied in the last half hour Tues seizing on reports that said the Greek debt talks might be saved.
Fin Times pA1 "Stocks lift off lows for a mxied finish" by Vic Reklaitis says the market showed resilience Tues as the major indexes bounced back from early losses to finish mixed and near their session highs as the action was mixed in higher volume with the current outlook still in a "confirmed uptrend."
USA Today p4B "Markets overcome early losses, relatively unchanged at close" by Bloomberg says stocks closed almost flat Tues after paring losses in the last half hour of trading amid optimism Greek leaders will commit to austerity measures needed for a 2nd bailout.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.37 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.36 (year ago it was 14.97); today's P/E estimate is 12.26 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.26 (year ago it was 12.81) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,701.61 up 0.57 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,701.04. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.72 up $0.02 from Monday's average closing price of $56.70. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.86 (DD/HD) down $0.14 from Monday's median closing price of $48. The lowest volume was TRV Travelers Companies Inc 59.16 +0.17 +0.29% 2.37 Mil NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.98 -0.27 -3.27% 383.65 Mil NYSE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $57 ($170,161 - $170,104).
MarketWatch Tuesday 2/14/12 4:11 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks made a late-session recovery Tuesday to recoup most losses, as investors reassessed Greece's prospects and a retail sales report that, while weaker than expected, still showed improvement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.03% rose 4.24 points to 12,878.28. The S&P 500 SPX -0.09% was off 1.3 point to 1,350.5. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.02% gained 0.4 point to 2,931.83. The Commerce Department on Tuesday said U.S. retail sales rose 0.4% in January, the most in four months, but less than the 1% expected. The disappointing retail sales number was a "handy excuse" for a market pullback, said Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at DowBulls.
