Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,981.51 down 1.44 or 0.01% from Friday's close of 12,982.95. For the year the Dow is up 6.25%. WSJ pC1 "The Dow made a visit, briefly, atop 13000 again" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow is up 25% from its Oct low. On Mon the Dow recovered from a 100 point deficit reversing losses after data on the US housing market & regional manufacturing showed signs of strength. On Mon fin'l & consumer discretionary stocks were the S&P's best performers while energy-utility & energy shares lsot the most. JPMorgan rose 78 cents and Bank of America climbed 16 cents. Disney rose 33 cents after analysts at Goldman Sachs called it one of their favorite stocks up from a neutral rating. Hewlett-Packard fell 39 cents.

Shares in Disney climbed 0.8% as Goldman Sachs made the diversified entertainment group a conviction buy suggesting new distribution deals will sustain high affiliate fee growth & drive margins for years to come. Fin'l leds the gainer int he S&P 500 with JPMorgan up 2%.

NYT pB10 "S&P closes at highest point since Mid '08" by Reuters says the S&P did this as oil prices retreated.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks battle back to a mixed finish" by Cincent Mao says Monday's action was mixed in higher trade as the current outlook is still in a confirmed uptrend.

USA Today p4B "Dow misses milestone close above 13000 on late selling" by AP says a burst of selling at he close drove the Dow lower.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.53 unchanged from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 14.86); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 12.45 up from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.67) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.38). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,715.24 down 0.19 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,715.43. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.17 down $0.01 from Friday's average closing price of $57.18. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.13 (DD/HD)up $0.14 from Friday's median closing price of $48.99. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.6 unch unch 2,252,133 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.04 +0.16 2.03% 265,568,986 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $17 ($171,543 - $171,524).

MarketWatch Monday 2/27/12 4:10 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks eked out a small gain on Monday, shedding most of their advance in the final minutes and sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJI -0.01% lower. Powered by improved sentiment about the U.S. economy following a rise in pending home sales, the S&P 500 SPX +0.14% ended up 1.85 point, or 0.1%, at 1,367.59. The Dow average, which had spent much of the session above 13,000, lost its advance right before the closing bell, sinking 1.44 point, or 0.01%, to 12,981.51. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.08% ended up 2.41 points, or 0.1%, at 2,966.16. Aside from hopes and disappointments about Europe's debt crisis, profit-taking from stocks' strong rally this year, as well as buyers looking to get in on the dips, have accounted for stocks' whipsawed moves in many sessions, analysts say.
