As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.36 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.28 (year ago it was 15.02); today's P/E estimate is 12.26 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.26 (year ago it was 12.81) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.36). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,701.04 up 9.62 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,691.42. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.70 up $0.32 from Friday's average closing price of $56.38. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48 (DD/HD) down $0.24 from Friday's median closing price of $48.24. If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $962 ($170,104 - $169,142).
MarketWatch Monday 2/13/12 5:06 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed broadly higher Monday after Greece approved austerity measures to ensure funds needed to avoid default. “This will provide enough financing to avoid a disorderly default in the near term, but it’s unlikely the story is over,” said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Asset Management Group in Pittsburgh. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.57% rose 72.81 points, or 0.6%, to 12,874.04. Coming back after its first weekly decline this year, the S&P 500 Index SPX +0.68% added 9.13 points, or 0.7%, to 1,351.77, with industrials gaining the most and utilities the only laggard among its 10 industry groups. U.S. equities followed stocks around the globe in welcoming Greece’s approval of austerity moves, with European finance ministers now considered likely to ratify a 130 billion euro ($172 billion) package for Greece when they meet in Brussels on Wednesday. Read more on what’s next for Greece. Gains were broad. On the Dow, 25 of 30 stocks closed higher. On the New York Stock Exchange, advancers beat decliners by more than three to one. AAPL +1.86% rose 1.9% to $502.60, closing above $500 for the first time, as the iPhone and iPad maker said a nonprofit labor group has started inspecting working conditions at the factories of its suppliers, including Foxconn’s plants in southern China. Also, House Republican leaders said they may set a vote for later in the week on a “backup” plan to extend a 10-month payroll tax cut for the rest of the year without figuring first how to pay for it. The tax cut is now set to expire Feb. 29.
