Post No. 1,653 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 16 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of May 16.

A read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall St. Journal &  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press and the Kalamazoo Gazette yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 12,393.45 down 26.41 or 0.21% from Wednesday's close of 12,419.86.  For the year the Dow is up 1.4%.  Of the 30 Dow components 13 gained and  17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron  and percentage-wise was  Bank of America. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Caterpillar.

WSJ pC4 "No Spring in stocks; Fall again" by Matt Jarzemsky says the Dow slid, capping their biggest monthly decline in 2 years, afer downbeat readings on the labor market & biz activity.

USA Today p4B "Sentiment has changed as Dow plunges 6.2% in May" by AP says any time the market dips like it did in May it erodes consifence and scares people out of the market.  For May the Dow closed down 26.41 points or 0.2% to end the month declining on all but 5 of 22 trading sessions.

NYT pB7 "With decline, market closes a dismal month" by AP says with a disapppointing finish on Thurs the stock market closed its worst month in 2 years as Facebook fizzled, the debt crisis in Europe  intensified and nobody was in the mood to buy.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Stocks rim day's losses; month of May proves ugly" by Paul Whitfield says stocks shook off morning weakness in the afternoon but closed lower Thurs after easing in the final 15 minutes.  Thursday's action was down in rising volume while the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

Fin Times p22 "Joy Global down nearly 10% afer gloomy forecast for rest of year" by Ajay Makan says the S&P 500 dropped sharply in the morning after 1Q growth for the US was revised down from an annualized rate of 2.2% to 1.9% on a gloomy day of economic data.  Walmart rose 0.6%  as it confronted a shareholder rebellion over its independent directors at its annual meeting.  Bank of America gained 2.1%.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.66 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.69 (year ago it was 13.98);  today's P/E estimate is 11.75 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 11.75 (year ago it was 12.54) and today's dividend yield is 2.66 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.70 (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,637.54 down 3.49 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,641.03. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.58 down  0.12 from Wednesday's average closing price of $54.70. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.80 (HD/DD)  down 0.53 from Wednesday's median closing price of $49.43. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares  and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost  $349 ($164,103 - $163,754).

MarketWatch  Thursday 4:15 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks finished the month with sizeable losses, with all three indexes off 6% or more during May. "People may be expecting a bit weaker number than they would have hoped for 24 hours ago," Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors, of Friday's monthly payrolls data, and the lowered expectations following a disappointing ADP report on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.21% fell 26.41 points, or 0.2%, to 12,393.45, off 6.2% for May. The S&P 500 Index  SPX -0.23% fell 2.99 points, or 0.2%, to 1,310.33, leaving it down 6.3% for the month. The Nasdaq Composite  COMP -0.35% fell 10.02 points, or 0.4%, to 2,827.34, down 7.2% for the month. May proved the worst in two years for the Dow and Nasdaq.
