Post No. 1,663 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution, and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,414.79 up 286.84  or 2.37% from Tuesday's close of 12,127.95. For the year the Dow is up 1.61%. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 gained and none declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $4.77 and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 7.39%.

WSJ pC1 "Stocks shake off blues" by Jon Cheng says new hopes that European Central banks will intervene push the Dow to its biggest gain of the year.  It was the first time since April the Dow had two straight days of gains.

Fin Times p24 "Bank of America helps power fin'ls as equities make gains" by Arash Massoudi says Bank of America rose as much as 9.4% as fin'l stocks led resurgent US equities to register their best one day gains this year.  Bank of America is charted.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Indexes score a hat trick but breakotus are scarce" by David Saito-Chung says stocks enjoyed their biggest single session gain in more than 2 weeks as volume climbed Wed and the current outlook is the market is in a correction.  AT&T, Kimberly Clark and Sought all hit new highs.

NYT pB3 "Central banks' actions help buoy markets" by Christine hauser says stocks surged on Wed as remarks from a Fed Res official stirred stimulus hopes & after stocks in Europe rose when the European Central Bank kept the door open to making a future cut to its benchmark interest rate.

USA Today p4B "Stocks rally as hope rises that Europe will stimulate economy" by Bloomberg says stocks turned in their best rally of the year Wed on speculation that global policymakers will move to stimulate economic growth.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.35 unchanged from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.35 (year ago it was 13.73); today's P/E estimate is 11.78 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 11.78 (year ago it was 12.40) and today's dividend yield is 2.77 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.77 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,640.36 up 39.90 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,602.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.68 up $1.26 from Tuesday's average closing price of $53.42. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.60 (HD/DD) up 1.47 from Tuesday's median closing price of $48.13. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $3,990 ($164,4036 - $160,246).

MarketWatch Wednesday 4:12 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks surged Wednesday, with the Dow industrials and S&P 500 both tallying their best day this year, on increasing optimism that central bankers would move to bolster the economy. "It appears the market is under the belief that Uncle Ben and his band of merry makers are going to be coming to the resue," Bob Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners, said of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other Federal Open Market Committee members. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +2.37% climbed 286.84 points, or 2.4%, to 12,414.79. The S&P 500 Index SPX +2.30% advanced 29.63 points, or 2.3%, to 1,315.13. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +2.40% added 66.61 points, or 2.4%, to 2,844.72.
