6/26/12 Tues am Boeing to Fly 787 at UK Air Show; Microsoft Buys Yammer

Post No. 1,695 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 6/20/12 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 6/20/12.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal &  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times,  USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,502.66 down 138.12 or 1.09% from Friday's close of 12,640.78.  For the year the Dow is up 2.33%. Of the 30 Dow components only Walmart gained and 29  declined. The only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was  Walmart up $1.88 or 1.31%%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar down $2.07 and percentage-wise was  Bank of America down 4.28%.

WSJ pC1 "Blue Monday chips retreat" by Jonathan Cheng says stocks fell around the globe and oil prices eased on Mon amid lowered expectations for any further progress on Europe's debt crisis.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Stocks take a beating; market back in correction" by Vincent Mao says a barrage of bad news out of Europe clobbered US stocks Mon wiping out Fri's rebound and a lot more.  Monday's action saw stocks fall sharply as market weakens.  The current outlook is the market is in a correction.

Fin Times p26 "Research in motion moves in a sharply downward direction" by Kandy Wong says US equities were sharply lower Mon led by energy & fin'l sectors.  Microsoft was down 2.7% due to its purchase of Yammer.  Walmart was up 1.3% after its said it was adding new stores in Canada.

USA Today p4B "Europe's troubles slam US markets, as well as its own" by AP says Europe's laest efforts to quell its fin'l crisis left investors exasperated Mon, causing steep losses in global stock markets.

NYT pB7 "A Sttep fall for shares as outlook for Europe continues to be gloomy" by Reuters says stocks in the US fell sharply on Mon on doubts that a European summit meeting this week would move any closer to solving the region's festering debt crisis.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.78 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13'94  (year ago it was 13.70); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.20) and today's dividend yield is 2.68 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.64 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,651.97 down 18.25 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,670.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.07 down $0.60 from Friday's average closing price of $55.67. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.41 (HD/DD) down 0.08 from Friday's median closing price of $50.49. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,825 ($167,022 - $165,197).

MarketWatch Mon. 4:35 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks declined Monday, denting June gains with four sessions in the month remaining, as pessimism rose about the outcome of a meeting of European leaders this week.“Unfortunately as we vacillate between cynicism and optimism about European leaders getting anything done, cynicism seems to be ruling the day,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets. The best and brightest have been drawn to Wall Street for the past thirty years, but no longer. MarketWatch reporter Steven Gelsi joins Mean Street to explain why the glory of Wall Street is gone, and which sectors could seize the mantle next. Photo: Reuters.
Cyprus said it would ask for financial aid, and Greece’s finance minister reportedly resigned his position Monday, just four days after being named to the job and three days after being hospitalized for nausea and dizziness. And Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will miss the coming European Union summit as he recuperates from eye surgery.  “Once again front and center is Europe. So far, again there is a lot of politics, with a fairly wide crevice between what Germany is willing to do versus what others are calling for,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in San Francisco. And, Spain formally asked for help for its banking system, but the request left unclear how much of the $125 billion loan packaged by other European nations was actually needed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.09%  fell 138.12 points, or 1.1%, to 12,502.66, with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT +1.31%   the sole component of its 30 to rise.
The S&P 500 SPX -1.60%   lost 21.30 points, or 1.6%, to 1,313.72, with technology hit the hardest among its 10 sectors. The session marked the third down day in four for both indexes.
Chesapeake Energy Corp. CHK -8.49%   8.5% after Reuters reported the company colluded with a Canadian competitor to keep a lid on land prices in areas viewed as rich in oil and natural gas.
“Housing is a sign of strength here on the domestic front, which is something that should not be lost on investors, although domestic news will unfortunately probably be trumped by Europe,” said Luschini.New-home sales rose 7.6% in May.A Supreme Court ruling on 2010’s Affordable Care Act is now expected Thursday.“Any of the credible outcomes will be market moving. If it’s upheld, it removes the overhang of the unknown, and a lot of health-care companies will probably celebrate that,” said Lazard’s Hogan.“If it’s struck down, then the overall market probably celebrates because it’s a lean in the direction of less regulation, although not great for health-care companies and service providers. If the individual mandate is dropped and the rest kept, again the hospital and insurance companies would lose,” he said.“It could be a big deal, predicated on which way it breaks. I don’t know that if the Supreme Court comes down on the side of its legality [that] is going to put the market off, but I do think its repeal could be a boost to equities,” said Luschini, who explains the former would be continuing the status quo, while the latter would be seen as “some relief on the regulatory front.”Another market observer predicted that health-care stocks could get a boost from the ruling regardless of what the justices decide. The dollar DXY 0.00%  gained against other global currencies, including the euro EURUSD +0.0218% , and Treasury prices rose, with the 10-year note yield 10_YEAR -0.06%  down to 1.607%.The price of oil declined, with oil futures CLQ2 +0.14%  down 55 cents to close at $79.21 a barrel. Gold GCQ2 -0.18%   gained $21.50, or 1.4%, to end at $1,588.40 an ounce.
