Post No. 1,664 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,460.96 up 46.17 or 0.37% from Wednesday's close of 12,414.79.  Of the 30 Dow components  16 gained, Johnson & Johnson was unchanged and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was United Technologies.  The biggestdecliner dollar-wise was  AT&T and percentage-wise was Bank of America.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.35 unchanged from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.35 (year ago it was 13.73); today's P/E estimate is 11.78 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 11.78 (year ago it was 12.40) and today's dividend yield is 2.77 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.77 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,646.46 up 6.10 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,640.36. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.88 up $0.20 from Wednesday's average closing price of $54.68. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.35 (HD/DD) up  0.75 from Wednesday's median closing price of $49.60. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $606 (164,646 - $164,040).

MarketWatch Thursday 4:61 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks lost much of Thursday’s gains after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would review the economy before making a decision on further stimulus. The near-neutral finish follows Wall Street’s best session of the year. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress that while the U.S economy still faces an assortment of risks, the Fed is not ready to to step in and take monetary action. “The strength yesterday in equity markets is not sustainable, with Europe still in trouble and global growth still slowing,” said Jim Russell, chief equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management.
After a 140-point climb, the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA +0.37% ended at 12,460.96, up 46.17 points, or 0.4%. With one more session left in the week, the Dow is up 2.8% from last Friday’s close, aided by Wednesday’s nearly 287-point jump. Halting a winning run at three sessions, the S&P 500 IndexSPX -0.01% finished fractionally lower at 1,314.99. Also breaking a three-day run higher, the Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.48% fell 13.7 points, or 0.5%, to 2,831.02. For every eight stocks declining, roughly seven gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 585 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.1 billion. The major indexes trimmed gains as Bernanke’s words proved less concrete than some might have hoped.“The markets were maybe looking for him to be a bit more definitive or dovish in his approach, so it’s a mild disappointment, but we didn’t think an imminent signal would be sent,” said Russell. “Bernanke is looking to fiscal and governmental leaders to bring fiscal-policy ideas to the table, and so far they’ve fallen short. There are limits to monetary policy, and we’re either seeing them or close to it,” he said. Oil and gold futures also ended lower after the Bernanke testimony. With less than two weeks before the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting, Bernanke “wasn’t going to be more explicit,” emailed Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. Stocks had spent nearly all of Thursday’s session on higher ground after China cut its interest rate in a bid to bolster the globe’s second-largest economy. The move fed into expectations that central bankers around the globe would move to boost growth.China has been “overt about saying we’re not happy with the current rate of growth, and taking interest rates down is within their tool box,” said Russell. “We think additional rate actions will be executed by China this year, two or three total of which we got one today,” said Russell, who adds that at 6.3%, China’s interest-rate environment differs greatly from that in the U.S., where the Fed’s key rate stands near zero. Late Wednesday, Fed Vice Chairman Janet Yellen said the U.S. economy is still vulnerable and could warrant further stimulus. “If we had to guess, we would expect the Fed to extend Operation Twist, which is due to shut down or expire on June 30,” said Russell, who adds the Fed might vary its purchases from Treasury bonds to “mortgage bonds or other types to keep rates on the long end of the yield curve low.” On the data front, the count of first-time applicants filing for jobless benefits declined last week, with claims down to 377,000 from a revised 389,000 the week before. “This is what we want to see, claims coming down. So it was a nice, moderate surprise,” said Russell of the weekly data. But, “we are cognizant that with the level of intensity of the headlines coming out of Europe that consumers and perhaps even business leaders are taking some sort of pause to hiring and spending,” Russell added.
