The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron down $3.75 or 4.25%.
WSJ pC1 "Bleak outlook whips stocks" by Chris Dieterich says facing a darkening blobal economic picture, investors drove US stocks to their worst day in 3 weeks & sent oil prices tumbling below $80 a barrel.

USA Today p4B "Slowing economy hammers stocks & commodities" by Bloomberg says stocks tumbled Thurs while commodities entered a bear maket, after signals of a global slowdown in manufacturing added to disappointing housing & labor market data.
Fin Times p22 "Energy and materials hit hardest as S&P 500 suffers sharp decline" by Anora Mahmudova says US equity markets yesterday suffered their largest one day drop since the start of the month. Exxon fell 3.4%. Bank of America dropped 3.9% and JPMorgan fell 2.6%.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.85 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.13 (year ago it was 13.71); today's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.65 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.60 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,661.34 down 33.14 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,694.48. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.38 down $1.10 from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.48. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.39 (HD/DD) down 1.53 from Wednesday's median closing price of $51.92. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,314 ($169,448 - $166,134).
MarketWatch Thurs. 4:10 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell sharply Thursday, with equities taking their second-hardest hit of the year after U.S. economic data largely disappointed, increasing worry about a global slowdown. Other economic reports had euro-area manufacturing slowing and a gauge of Chinese output also contracting. "We're entering summer, in politics this used to be called the 'silly season,' but I don't think there is a lot of focus on economic fundamentals right now. Some of the economic data is a little on the weak side, but to me the most important thing is the U.S. economy is not very vulnerable to recession right now," said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-1.96% fell 250.82 points, or 2%, to 12,573.57. The S&P 500 SPX-2.23% lost 30.18 points, or 2.2%, to 1,325.51.
