Post No. 1,676 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's  Wall St. Journal, Financial   Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,498.38 down 77.42 or 0.62% from Tuesday's close of 12,573.8. For the year the Dow is up 2.28%. Of the 30 Dow components  7 gained, AT&T was unchanged and  22  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Johnson & Johnson up $1.36 or 2.16%.  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Caterpillar down $1.73 and percentage-wise was American Express 2.44%.

WSJ pC4 "Dow drops 77 points as Italy casts dark cloud" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks sank after an up and down session Wed as worries about Europe and weak US economic data eclipsed earlier optimism about the outlook for fin'l stocks.  Earlier the Dow was up nearly 0.2% as JPMorgan CEO James Dimon testified in front of a Senate panel and got less contentious questions than expected.  JUPMorgan's stock was up 53 cents.  Johnson & Johnson gained $1.37 as it received regulatory clearance to close its $19.7 bil bid for medical device maker Synthes.

NYT pB5 "Sahres fall on fears over Greek elections" by Reuters says Wall St ended lower on Wed driven down by fears ahead of the weekend elections in Greece.

USA Today p4B "Stocks retreat on reail sales, uncertainty over Europe debt" by Bloomberg says stocks slid Wed following Tues' gain as retail sales fell and concern about Europe's debt crisis grew amid higher borrowings costs in Italy & Germany.  JPMorgan jumped 53 cents as CEO Dimon testified before Congress.  Johnson & Johnson gained $1.37 as its $19.7 bil purchase of Aynthes was approved.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Major indexes drift lower, but the leaders sink faster" by David Saito-Chung says mr. market is still having a hard time making up his mind which way to go, at least in the short term as the major indexes gave back most of the prior day's gain with moderate losses as the market is in a correction.

Fin Times p26 "Dell investors switch on to its plan to pay an annual dividend" by Kandy Wong says US benchmark indices closed lower yesterday after a volatile session.  Retail sales fell 0.2% and registered a decline for a 2nd straight month.  Walmart fell 1% as its expansion plans in Latin America through the purchase of France's Carrefour SA are losing momentum.  Johnson & Johnson added 2.2%  as JPMorgan upgraded it to buy from hold.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.74 downn from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.85 (year ago it was 13.54); today's P/E estimate is 11.75 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 11.75 (year ago it was 12.01) and today's dividend yield is 2.69 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.68 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,651.40 down 9.97 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,661.37. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.05 down  $0.33 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.38. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.04 (HD/DD) down $1.01 from Tuesday's median closing price of $51.05. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $997 ($166,137 - $165,140).

MarketWatch Wednesday. 4:15 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks finished with sizeable losses on Wednesday on uncertainty about Greek elections and after Egan-Jones Ratings Co. downgraded its sovereign rating on Spain futher into junk. "After Sunday we'll know whether or not Greece remains in the euro zone," said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets LLC. "But there's very little chance that we'll know more about Spain, which is much more of a concern for us in real terms," Hogan added of the far larger European economy. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.62% fell 77.42 points, or 0.6%, to 12,496.38. The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.70% retreated 9.3 points, or 0.7%, to 1,314.88.
