http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,270  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,    Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15291.66 down 8.68 or 0.06% from Tuesday's close of 15330.34.  For the year the Dow is up 16.69%. Of the Dow components  13 gained  and 17  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up 95 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.81% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was American Express down $1.28 or 1.65%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks seesaw around Fed minutes" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks ended the day barely changed after the Fed's latest policy setting meeting minutes showed a divide among officials over when to aid stimulus.

NYT pB5 "Investors parse Fed report and a 4 day rally fizzles" by Reuters says the Dow interrupted a 4 day rally as investors tried to gauge when the Fed will scale back its economic stimulus.

FT p22 "S&P 500 stages last minute rally to notch up fifth day of gains" by jason Abbruzzese says the S&P eked out a gain after the Fed Open Market Comm minutes were released and Hewlett-Packard added 1.8% after Citi boosted its rating on it.

AJC pA13 "Fed minutes leave stocks flat" by AP says the stock market ended the day little changed after the publication of minutes from the Fed's June meeting.

IBD pB2 "Techs lift nasdaq higher in otherwise dull trading" by David Saito-Chung says the nasdaq pushed ever closer to a new multiyear high with a decent gain Tues while the other major indexes settled for a flat finish as the market is still in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's  trailing P/E ratio is   16.71 down from yesterday's     trailing P/E ratio of 16.72 (last year it was 14.16);  today's P/E estimate is   13.55 unchanged   from Wednesday's  P/E estimate of 13.55  (year ago it was 12.15) and today's   dividend yield is   2.40 unchanged   from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.40 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 15,409.39 on May 28, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1991.22 down 1.13 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1992.35. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.37 down 4 cents from Tuesday's average of $66.41.  The median closing price of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.30   (DIS/UNH) down 14 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $66.44. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would havelost $113   ($199,235 - $199,122).

Wednesday MarketWatch 4:28 by   Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended little changed on Wednesday after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting had multiple members looking for more improvement in the labor market before cutting the pace of central-bank bond purchases.
“It’s exactly in line with what the Fed has been telling us: we’re going to monitor the situation,” said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade.“Everyone was hoping they could read something into the minutes, but when the Fed board themselves are so divided on what the next plan should be, the market can’t read anything into it” with certainty, he said. The official record showed about half of the Fed’s 19 senior officials said they would support ending the central bank’s monthly purchase of $85 billion in bonds by year-end. “Many” other members said asset purchases would likely be needed into 2014.“You basically had a split ticket,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott.“We’ve had so many positive days in a row without any real news, so the market seems vulnerable to some profit taking, or to rest,” said Luschini.Snapping a four-session winning run, its longest in more than two months, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.06%  fell 8.68 points, or less than 0.1%, to end at 15,291.66.Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ +1.81%  paced blue-chip gains that included 13 of the Dow’s 30 components after Citigroup upgraded the PC maker.
The S&P 500 index SPX +0.02%  gained less than half a point to 1,652.62, with financials the heaviest weight and health care the best performing of its 10 big sectors.A day after closing at a more-than 12-year high, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.47%  climbed 16.50 points, or 0.5%, to 3,520.76.Advancers edged just ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 671 million shares traded.Composite volume neared 3 billion. At a press conference following the June 18-19 meeting, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank could start reducing its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases later this year.
