A read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; amp; Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg)   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15548.54 up 78.02 or 0.50%  from Wednesday's close of 15470.52.  For the year the Dow is up 18.65%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $4.32 or 6.52% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was American Express down $2.79 or 3.63%.

WSJ pC4 "Fin'l shares give lift" by Chris Dieterich says stocks notched anotehr record helped by strong readings from the US labor market & manufacturing sector.  The Dow was lifted by UnitedHealth which jumped $4.32 after beating estimates and affirming rev outlook.  UNH is charted under Good News.  IBM was up $3.44 after it topped 2Q earnings estimates & raised its full year outlook.   Intel is charted under Bad News after it reported slumping earnings & lowered its full year rev view.

AJC pA11 "Earnings gains boost stocks" by AP says earnings gains at major US firms & encouraging economic news pushed US stocks to record levels.  A drop in claims for unemployment benefits helped.  Dow's gains were led by IBM and UnitedHealth Group.

As of the open  of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of     Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's  trailing P/E ratio was  16.85 up   from yesterday's     trailing P/E ratio of 16.73 (last year it was 14.19);  today's  P/E estimate is  13.55 unchanged   from Thursday's  P/E estimate of 13.55  (year ago it was 12.23) and today's   dividend yield is 2.39 up   from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.37  (last year it was 2.63). The Dow's all-time high was 15,548.54  on July 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2024.67 up 10.16 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 2014.51. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.49 up 34 cents    from Wednesday's average of $67.15.  The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.19   (DIS/UNH) up 2.39 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $65.80. The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,016   ($202,467 -  $201,451).

Thursday MarketWatch 4:29 by   Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose on Thursday, lifting benchmark indexes to record highs, after jobless claims fell and earnings from corporations including UnitedHealth Group Inc. topped expectations as investors heard from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.Surpassing its prior intraday record set on May 22, the S&P 500 index SPX +0.50% rose to a session high of 1,693.12. It closed up 8.46 points, or 0.5%, at 1,689.37, its 21st record close this year.Financials paced gains among its major 10 sectors, while telecommunications and information technology posted losses.“It’s earnings and Bernanke — that’s what is supporting the market and driving it higher,” said Chris Gaffney, senior market strategist at Everbank Wealth Management.

Bernanke spent a second day on Capitol Hill, discussing the outlook and Fed rate policy with the Senate Banking Committee. The Fed chief said that economic data since the last Fed rate-policy meeting have been “mixed” and it was “way too early” to make a judgment on when the central bank will slow down the pace of its asset purchases.“We’ve transitioned to a point where good news is good news, now that market participants have successfully acquired the knowledge that a reduction in QE is not less accommodation, that there is a difference between reducing quantitative easing and lifting the Fed funds rate,” said Art Hogan, a market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets. Bond buying by the Fed is also known as quantitative easing.Economic reports on Thursday had jobless claims falling by 24,000 to 334,000 last week from a revised 358,000 the week before, according to figures released by the Labor Department. Paul Vigna, David Benoit and Angelo Zino discuss Dell's delay in its shareholder vote, and Kathleen Madigan looks at the state of the economy. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s economic index this month rose to 19.8, the highest since March 2011, from 12.5 in June.In addition to equities, the U.S. dollar DXY +0.13% , longer-term Treasury yields 10_YEAR +1.60% , oil CLU3 +1.42% and gold GCQ3 +0.40% also rose. One factor behind the recent spike in long-term interest rates is the deleveraging of “excessively risky” investing, along with improving economic reports and Wall Street’s reactions to signals sent by the Fed, Bernanke said. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR +1.60% rose to 2.541%, after falling to a two-week low Wednesday. The yield had jumped from 1.93% on May 21, a day before Bernanke said the Fed could reduce bond purchases if data indicate continuing improvement on the jobs front.
After striking an intraday record of 15,589.40, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.50% closed up 78.02 points, or 0.5%, to 15,548.54, marking its 27th record close this year. Pacing the Dow’s gains, UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH +6.52% rose 6.5% after reporting a larger-than-expected increase in second-quarter net income. Dow component Intel Corp. INTC -0.23% retreated 3.8% after projecting third-quarter sales that could come in below expectations. International Business Machines Corp.
