http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,289  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of July 14, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 7/14/13.

A read of the print editions of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15545.55 up 1.81 or 0.01%  from Friday's close of 15543.74.  For the year the Dow is up 18.63%.  Of the Dow components  12   gained and 18 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Travelers up 77 cents and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 1.94% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was McDonald's down $2.69 or 2.68%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks step over a low earnings bar" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks edged higher as investors weighed weak earnings news & fresh signs of a pause in the housing recovery.  McDonald's is charted under Bad News as giving a disappointing profit report.

NYT pB7 "McDonald's falls short, restraining amrket's rally" by Reuters says the stock market edged higher on Mon although disappointing McDonald's earnings kep the Dow from making any significant gains.

FT p22 "McDonald's warning on economy fails to halt S&P hitting new high" by jason Abbruzzese says the S&P closed at a new high & set a new intraday highd espite a mixed earnings season with McDonald's highlighting ivnestor sensitivity to negative outlooks.

IBD pB2 "Stocks rise in quiet trade to start big earnings week" by Vincent Mao says stocks nabbed modest gains after a quiet session Mon as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.  Disappointing 2Q results from McDonald's hampered the Dow.

As of the open  of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of   Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  16.75 unchanged   from yesterday's    trailing P/E ratio of 16.85 (last year it was 14.19);  today's   P/E estimate is  13.55 unchanged   from Monday's   P/E estimate of 13.55  (year ago it was 12.35) and today's   dividend yield is 2.36 unchanged   from yesterday's   dividend yield of 2.39  (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 15,548.54  on July 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2024.28 up 0.24 from Friday's losing numerator of 2024.04. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.48 up 1 cent    from Friday's average of $67.47.  The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.29   (DIS/UNH) down 2 cents from Friday's median closing price of $68.31. The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $24   ($202,428 - $202,404 ).

MarketWatch 7/22/13 Mon. 4:34  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks posted modest gains on Monday, with the S&P 500 notching its 23rd record close this year, as the financial and health-care sectors led the market higher. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.20%  added 3.44 points, or 0.2%, to end at 1,695.53, rising for a fourth straight session. The financial sector was the top gainer and energy was the top decliner among its 10 major sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.36%  rose 12.77 points, or 0.4%, to 3,600.39.Paul Vigna and Ben Casselman discuss the state of the U.S. economy, and Rolfe Winker looks at Daniel Loeb's resignation from Yahoo's board.“I’m still in a neutral mode for the week. We should have a sideways week, but every time I thought that, we’ve gone slightly higher,” said Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.01%  gained 1.81 points to 15,545.55, finishing slightly below its record close of 15,548.54 hit on July 18.Leading the Dow higher, Microsoft Corp. MSFT +1.94%  and Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ +1.47%  rose 1.9% and 1.5%, respectively. Fast-food chain McDonald’s MCD -2.68%  led blue-chip declines, with its shares off 2.7% after the release of its second-quarter earnings. The company said its “results for the remainder of the year are expected to remain challenged.”McDonald’s is “a big component of the market because it’s a very big company; it’s the only real drag on the Dow today,” said Frederick, who noted that International Business Machines Corp.’s IBM +0.28%  rebound from its slide last week was helping to neutralize McDonald’s impact. IBM shares gained 0.3%.Yahoo Inc. YHOO -4.29% shares fell 4.3% on news that Dan Loeb of Third Point is stepping down from the board and unwinding a part of the hedge fund’s stake in the search engine. More than 580 million shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Composite volume topped 2.7 billion, below the one-month average. Monday’s economic reports had existing-home sales falling 1.2% to 5.08 million in June. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected sales to have risen 1.9% last month to a seasonally adjusted rate of 5.28 million.“Despite the decline, this is still one of the strongest gains seen during the recovery,” noted Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC, in emailed commentary.Stock-index futures on Monday offered little reaction to the Chicago Federal Reserve’s national activity index, which rose to negative 0.13 in June from negative 0.29 in May.The dollar DXY -0.49%  declined against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners including the yen USDJPY -0.13% , while the yield on the 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR +0.04%   held steady at 2.493%.
