http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,293  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of July 14, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 7/14/13.

A read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times,  Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; amp; Constitution  & amp; Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15542.24 down 25.5 or 0.16%  from Tuesday's close of 15567.74.  For the year the Dow is up 18.61%. Of the Dow components  10   gained and 20 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was IBM up $1.63 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.48% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $2.08 or 2.43%.

WSJ pC4 "Investors develop a fear of heights" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks declined Wed as the latest push to record highs lost steam amid a mixed bag of corp earnings reports.  Caterpillar was the Dow's biggest decliner as it slid $2.08 as its 2Q earnings fell short of analyst estimates.  Boeing beat forecasts for earnings and rev but shares fell 84 cents.

FT p20 "Apple supports NASDAQ after iPhone sales beat expectations" by Jason Abbruzzese saws good earnigns from Apple pushed Nasdaq to a small increase while the S&P tacked down.  Caterpillar fell 2.4%  after cutting year forecast and reporting a  43% decline in net income.  AT&T said rising costs offset increased customers and its customer growth was behind Verizon.

NYT pB5 "Back to back losses, the first in a month" by AP & AJC pA17 "A slight dip in Dow, S&P" say a gloomy earnings reort and outlook Wed from Caterpillar helped to pull 2 of the major indexes lower, the Dow & the S&P.

IBD pB2 "S&P falls as market logs new distribution day" by David Saito-Chung says Wed action saw mixed action in higher vol as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of   Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's  trailing P/E ratio is  16.69 up   from yesterday's    trailing P/E ratio of 16.60  (last year it was 14.12);  today's   P/E estimate is  13.55 unchanged   from Wednesday's   P/E estimate of 13.55  (year ago it was 12.35) and today's   dividend yield is 2.36 unchanged   from yesterday's   dividend yield of 2.36  (last year it was 2.65). The Dow's all-time high was 15,567.74  on July  23, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2023.85 down 3.32 from Tuesday's losing numerator of 2027.17. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.46 down 11  cents    from Tuesday's average of $67.57.  The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.59   (DIS/UNH) up 2 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $68.57. The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $332   ($202,717 - $202,385).

MarketWatch 7/24/13 Wed. 4:20  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks declined on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreating from the prior day’s record close, amid mixed earnings and rising borrowing costs. “People are naturally going to be a little skeptical. We’re at all-time highs yet signals from companies are somewhat mixed,” said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade.
It might be a soap opera or a thriller, but the Dell plot has a new twist: hours before a vote on the Dell buyout, there's a new offer. Utilities were hardest hit among the S&P 500SPX -0.38%  sectors, and only technology remained in positive turf, drawing support from Apple Inc. AAPL +5.14% .
In its first back-to-back drop in nearly five weeks, the S&P 500 declined 6.45 points, or 0.4%, to 1,685.94, after rising to an intraday high of 1,698.38, which had it above its all-time finish of 1,695.52 set on Monday. “We got over 1,690 this morning, so we’re in incredible territory as far as the market is concerned,” said Kinahan. A jump in bond yields was a likely factor in U.S. stocks relinquishing gains, noted Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at the Lindsey Group LLC.
Rising for a second session, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note10_YEAR +3.15%  used in determining mortgage rates and other consumer loans rose 11 basis points to 2.583%. Apple said its fiscal third-quarter China revenue fell 14% from a year earlier. Here’s what this means for Apple and its component suppliers in Asia. Caterpillar IncCAT -2.43%  shares fell 2.4% after the maker of construction and mining equipment reported a drop in second-quarter profit and lowered its full-year outlook. AT&T Inc. T -1.14%  also weighed on the blue-chip index, its shares off 1.1%, after the telecommunications company reported second-quarter profit slipped 2.1%. Boeing Co.
