http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,301  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal,   Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times,  USA Today, Atlanta Journal & amp; amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15521.97 down 36.86 or 0.24%  from Friday's close of 15558.63.  Of the Dow components  7   gained and 23 declined. For the year the Dow is up 18.45%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up 96 cents or 1.17% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was  Chevron down $1.36 and percentage-wise was Bank of America down 1.43%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue Monday for stocks" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks slipped as investors awaited a flood of economic news slated for this week.

FT p20 "Boost from new spurt of M&A countered by investor caution" by Jason Abbruzzese says deal news drove the S&P up.  JPMorgan fell 0.6% and Bank of America fell 1.4%.  Caterpillar led the Dow rising 1.2% as it announced a deal to buy $1 bil of its stock from Societe Generale.

NYT pB6 "July rally seems to wane as shares slip, pending major economic reports" & AJC pA9 "Stocks down on busy week" by AP says stocks edged lower Mon as investors waited for economic reports this week.  On Wed the gov reports its first estimate of US economic growth for 2Q & on Fri it publishes its monthly jobs survey.

IBD pB2 "Stocks slip in mixed trade; distribution hits S&P" by Vincent Mao says Monday's action saw modest losses, mixed trade as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open  of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of   Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.66 down   from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.70 (last year it was 14.23);  today's    P/E estimate is  13.90 unchanged  from Monday's   P/E estimate of 13.90  (year ago it was 12.45) and today's    dividend yield is 2.37 up   from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.36  (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 15,567.74  on July  23, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2021.21 down 4.80 from Friday's losing numerator of 2026.01. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.37 down 16  cents    from Friday's average of $67.53.  The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.70   (DIS/UNH) up 10 cents  from Friday's median closing price of $68.60. The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $480    ($202,601 - $202,121).

MarketWatch 7/29/13Mon. 4:02  pm by William L. Watts says U.S. stocks lost ground Monday, unable to break into positive territory after a drop in June pending home sales as investors awaited marquee data later this week on second-quarter gross domestic product and July employment, as well as the outcome Wednesday of a Federal Reserve policy meeting. The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.37% dropped 6.32 points to 1,685.33, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.24% shed 36.86 points to 15,521.97. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.39% declined 14.02 points to 3,599.14.
