7/14/13 Sun/Sat Battery Not Cause of Boeing 787 Fire at Heathrow

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,275  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of July 14, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 7/14/13.

A read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; & Sunday's & Saturday's  New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution    yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15460.92 up 169.26 or 1.11% from Thursday's close of 15460.92. For the week the Dow is up 328.46  or 2.17% from last Friday's close of 15135.84. For the year the Dow is up 18.01%. Of the Dow components  16  gained, 3 (Alcoa, Coke and Walmart) were unchanged and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Traveler up 41.48 and percentage-wise was Alcoa up 1.81% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down 45.01 or 4.69% due to another fire on a Dreamliner that was on the ground.

IBD pB8 "Stocks close strong week on light but positive note" by Paul Whitfield says stocks booked moderate gtains in quiet volume Fri but posted the idnexes' best weekly gains since early Jan.  The Dow was flat mainly due to Boeing's sell-off.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

Sat. NYT pB7 "Shares creep upward despite mixed economic news" by AP & Sat AJC pA12 "Another record day for stocks" by AP says after spending most of Fri flat or down, stocks rallied at the last minutes and closed slightly higher, to post new record highs for the Dow and the S&P.

WSJ pB5 "Stocks cap week with slight gain" by Matt Jarzemsky says stock indexes rose further into record territory as JPMorgan and Wells Fargo reported better than expected earnings and investors cont'd to debate the impact of the Fed scaling back its efforts to support the economy.   Boeing fell $5.01 or 4.7% after one of its 787s caught fire at London's Heathrow Airport.

As of the close  of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6   of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's  closing trailing P/E ratio was  16.86 down   from Friday's    opening  trailing P/E ratio of 16.91 (last year it was 14.22);  Friday's closing P/E estimate was  13.55 unchanged   from Friday's opening  P/E estimate of 13.55  (year ago it was 12.23) and Friday''s   dividend yield was 2.37 uchanged   from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.40 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 15,464.30  on July 12, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2013.70 up 0.44 from Thursday's closing numerator of 2013.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.12 up 1 cent    from Thursday's average of $67.11.  The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.49   (DIS/UNH) up 2 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $67.47. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $41   ($201,370 - $201,329 ).

Friday MarketWatch 4:31 by   Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Friday recorded a third week of gains, with the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 tallying record closes following upbeat earnings from two major banks. “There’s plenty of action in individual names,” emailed Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., while noting the S&P 500’s 8-point range during Friday’s session. That said, “a couple of stock-specific issues are not going to derail the bulls as the buyers still have momentum at their backs. However, if the stock-specific issues start to add up with respect to earnings shortfalls or pre-announcements, then that would be enough ‘cover’ for people to take money off the table,” Spar added. Boeing Co.BA -4.69% shares fell 4.7%, weighing on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner caught fire at London’s Heathrow Airport, forcing the closure of both of the airport’s runways. No passengers were aboard the aircraft, which had been plagued by a series of battery issues this year. In the financial sector, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM -0.31%  and Wells Fargo & Co.WFC +1.77%  both reported second-quarter results that beat expectations.Shares of J.P. Morgan ended down 0.3%, while those of Wells Fargo gained 1.8%. The bank earnings are “good news overall, with the financial-services sector being a major component to the overall market and key to economic growth,” said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones in St. Louis. “Overall, we’re going to see a flat day, because we’ve got offsetting good and bad news,” said Warne of Friday’s lackluster session. Shares of United Parcel Service Inc. /quotes/zigman/251269/quotes/nls/ups UPS -5.83%  declined 5.8% after the shipper reduced its outlook. While “not good news that they are seeing weaker results, it’s not a broader indication that shipping is slower than we already knew,” Warne said of the UPS news. “There are areas that are not moving as fast as people would like,” she added, listing manufacturing as among the sectors where growth has slowed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA +0.02%  climbed 3.38 points to 15,464.30, an all-time closing high that had it up 2.2% from the week-ago close. Up 3% for the week and also finishing at a record, the S&P 500 /quotes/zigman/3870025 SPX +0.31%  added 5.17 points, or 0.3%, to 1,680.19, with financials pacing its gains. Up for a seventh session in its longest winning stretch since July 2011, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.61%  gained 21.78 points, or 0.6%, to 3,600.08, giving it a weekly rise of 3.5%. Advancers just outpaced decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 681 million shares traded. Composite volume approached 3.1 billion.
