Post No. 2,277 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of July 14, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 7/14/13.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15484.26 up 19.96 or 0.13% from Friday's close of 15464.30. Of the Dow components 12 gained and 18 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing up $3.79 or 3.72% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Disney down $1.0 or 1.57%.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's trailing P/E ratio was 16.86 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.91 (last year it was 14.22); Monday's closing P/E estimate is 13.55 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 13.55 (year ago it was 12.23) and Monday''s dividend yield was 2.37 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.40 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 15,484.26 on July 15, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2016.30 up 2.60 from Friday's closing numerator of 2013.70. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.21 up 9 cents from Friday's average of $67.12. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.78 (DIS/UNH) down 71 cents from Friday's median closing price of $67.49. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $260 ($201,630 - 201,370).
Monday MarketWatch 4:22 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks climbed modestly on Monday, with the S&P 500 and the Dow industrials rising to record closing highs again, after Citigroup Inc. reported better-than-expected earnings. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.14% climbed 2.31 points, or 0.1%, to 1,682.50, rising for an eighth consecutive session, its longest run higher since an eight-session stretch that ended Jan. 25. It also marked another all-time finish, its 20th so far this year.
Analysts at Bank of America Merrill
Lynch raised their 2013 year-end target for the
S&P 500 to 1,750 from 1,600 previously. Utilities paced sector gains Monday and
telecommunications led the losses in the S&P 500. Citigroup’s /quotes/zigman/5065548/quotes/nls/c C
+1.97%
shares rose 2% after the banking giant reported a steep jump in
second-quarter profit. “It’s a big earnings week, but expectations are modest,
so it’ll be interesting to see how companies perform with lowered expectations,”
said Paul Mangus, head of equity research and strategy at Wells
Fargo Private Bank.
A better-than-forecast manufacturing report helped
neutralize worse-than-anticipated U.S. retail-sales data. “We’re encouraged that the market is focusing on
fundamentals again,” said Mangus added.
The Dow Jones
Industrial Average DJIA +0.13% rose 19.96 points, or 0.1%, to
15,484.26, a record closing high — its 26th this year. Dow component Boeing Co. BA
+3.72%
shares rose 3.7%, regaining a large chunk of Friday’s losses,
after British investigators reportedly found no evidence that
batteries caused a fire on one of the manufacturer’s 787 planes. The Nasdaq
Composite COMP +0.21% rose 7.41 points, or 0.2%, to
3,607.49. More than 567 million shares traded on the New
York Stock Exchange. Composite volume topped 2.57 billion. Gold prices rose, with August futures GCQ3 +0.45% rising 0.5% to end at
$1,283.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New
York Mercantile Exchange. The cost of crude also increased, with oil futures
/quotes/zigman/2291781 CLQ3 +0.43% rising 37 cents to $106.32 a
barrel. Crude’s spike has been “a fairly quick reaction to
geopolitical events, so it may be a blip, only time will tell,” said Mangus at
Wells Fargo, referring to recent turmoil in Egypt.

Friday
MarketWatch 4:31 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Friday
recorded a third week of gains, with the Dow industrials and the
S&P 500 tallying record closes following upbeat earnings from
two major banks. “There’s plenty of action in individual names,”
emailed Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus &
Co., while noting the S&P 500’s 8-point range during Friday’s
session. That said, “a couple of stock-specific issues are not going to
derail the bulls as the buyers still have momentum at their backs.
However, if the stock-specific issues start to add up with respect to
earnings shortfalls or pre-announcements, then that would be enough
‘cover’ for people to take money off the table,” Spar added. Boeing Co.BA -4.69% shares fell 4.7%, weighing on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner caught fire at
London’s Heathrow Airport, forcing the closure of both of the airport’s
runways. No passengers were aboard the aircraft, which had been
plagued by a series of battery issues this year. In the financial sector, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM -0.31% and Wells Fargo & Co.WFC +1.77% both
reported second-quarter results that beat expectations.Shares of J.P.
Morgan ended down 0.3%, while those of Wells Fargo gained 1.8%. The
bank earnings are “good news overall, with the financial-services
sector being a major component to the overall market and key to
economic growth,” said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones
in St. Louis. “Overall, we’re going to see a flat day, because we’ve
got offsetting good and bad news,” said Warne of Friday’s lackluster
session. Shares of United Parcel Service Inc. /quotes/zigman/251269/quotes/nls/ups UPS -5.83% declined 5.8% after the shipper reduced its outlook.
While “not good news that they are seeing weaker results, it’s not a
broader indication that shipping is slower than we already knew,” Warne
said of the UPS news. “There are areas that are not moving as fast as
people would like,” she added, listing manufacturing as among the
sectors where growth has slowed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA +0.02% climbed
3.38 points to 15,464.30, an all-time closing high that had it up 2.2%
from the week-ago close. Up 3% for the week and also finishing at a
record, the S&P 500 /quotes/zigman/3870025 SPX +0.31% added
5.17 points, or 0.3%, to 1,680.19, with financials pacing its
gains. Up for a seventh session in its longest winning stretch since
July 2011, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.61% gained 21.78 points, or 0.6%, to 3,600.08, giving it a weekly rise of 3.5%. Advancers just outpaced decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 681 million shares traded. Composite volume approached 3.1 billion.
