Post No. 2,388 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 9/23/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 9/23/13.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's News Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; and Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15258.24 down 70.06 or 0.46% from Thursday's close of 15328.20. For the year the Dow is up 16.44% . For the week the Dow was down 192.85 or 1.25% from last Friday's close of 15,451.09. Of the Dow components 5 gained and 25 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Nike up $3.30 or 4.69% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $3.30 and percentage-wise was Cisco down 1.85 %.
IBD pB8 "Stocks can't overcome bad start; volume mixed" by Paul Whitfield says stocks stumbled at the start Fri and never regained their balance as Friday's action was down in mixed volume and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
FT p13 "JC Penney falls after share sale to fund holiday season" says Nike shares rose 5% after it reported a stronger than expected quarterly profit.
WSJ pB5 "Stocks wilt as a difficult week ends" by Tomi Kilgore says stocks fell Fri as investors weighed the budget standoff vs. upbeat signs from companies and consumers. Goldman sachs which is managing J.C. Penney's stock offering fell $2.44. Goldman, like Nike is a new addition to the Dow , and was the biggest decliner on the week.
NYT pB6 "Shares slide as Washington nears a showdown on the budget" by AP &AJC pA12 "D.C impasse chills markets" by AP says stocks fell fri as a flurry of activity in DC seemed to do little to reduce concerns about shut down of gov or that a fight over fed borrowing will continue into Oct.
As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 14.20 down from Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 14.27 (last year it was 14.64); Friday's closing P/E estimate is 14.39 up from Friday's opening P/E estimate of 14.25 (year ago it was 12.75) and Friday's closing dividend yield is 2.61 up from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.60 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94 on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2375.95 down 10.89 from Thursday's closing numerator of 2386.84. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.20 down 36 cents from Thursday's average of 79.56. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.16 (WMT/HD) down 19 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $75.35 (WMT/HD) . The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,089 ($238,684 - $237,595) .
MarketWatch 9/27/13 Fri. 4:27 pm by Kate Gibson says declined on Friday, with the S&P 500 index and Dow industrials posting their first weekly drop in four, as Wall Street remained unsettled over the lack of progress in budget negotiations on Capitol Hill, with a deadline just days away. "Right now there is going to be a lot of misplaced angst over the whole debt-ceiling argument. It's political brinkmanship, a sequel that has the same ending time after time; there will be a rash of negative headlines and people losing their tempers. It's going to create some choppiness in the market between here and October," said Matthew Kaufler, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.46% fell 70.06 points to 15,258.24. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.41% lost 6.92 points to 1,691.75. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.15% fell 5.83 points to 3,781.59.
