Post No. 2,380 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 9/23/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 9/23/13.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Barron's, Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15401.38 down 49.71 or 0.32% from Friday's close of 15451.09. For the year the Dow is up 17.53%. Of the Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealt up $1.25 or 1.77% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs down $4.50 or 2.65%.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks extend declines" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks fell for a 3rd straight session as investors grappled with an uncertain outlook for the Fed policy.
NYT pB9 "Fight over US budget weighs on shares" & AJC pA9 "Dow declines third day in a row" say the Dow fell for a 3rd straight day on Mon amid investor concern about the strength of the economy.
IBD pB2 "Stocks lose more ground; Apple softens Nasdaq's hit" by Vincent Mao says stocks retreated more Mon but the Nasdaq fared relatively better. Monday's action was down in lower volume while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.155715905 changing from Monday's divisor of 0.130216081. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.06 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.12 (last year it was 14.77); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.25 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 14.25 (year ago it was 12.95) and today's dividend yield is 2.43 unchanged from Monday's dividend yield of 2.39 (last year it was 2.49). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94 on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2005.51 down 6.47 from Friday's closing numerator of 2011.98. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.155715905) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.85 down 22 cents from Friday's average of 67.07. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.29 (DIS/UNH) up 50 cents from Friday's median closing price of $67.79. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $647 ($201,198 - $200,551) .

9/23/13 Mon. 4:23 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell on Monday
after notching three weeks of
gains, as investors heard from Federal Reserve officials and worried
about another standoff in Washington.“Tapering might begin as soon as
October or they might hold off until a
new [Fed] chairman is elected. The comments and the message the Fed sent
last week is the economy is still on some soft footing and doesn’t have
the strength to begin this process — that’s not a good message to
send,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners.
“They got the market ready for this tapering. Their communication
process of late has been abysmal,” he added. But Monday’s decline has
“more to do with the discussions going on in
Washington related to the budget talks and the debt ceiling; the
rhetoric has spooked the market,” said Pavlik of the hardening stances
in Washington that heighten the chances of a government shutdown.Down
