9/18/13 Wed pm Dow Closes at All Time High of 15676.94 up 147.21 or 0.95%

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,374 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15676.94 up 147.21 or 0.95%   from  Tuesday's close of 15529.73. Of  the Dow components  29   gained and  1   declined, not including Goldman Sachs, Nike  and Visa all of which were up (these 3 will replace Alcoa, Bank of America, and Hewlett-Packard as of close of market on  9/20).  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was IBM up $2.26 and percentage-wise was Alcoa up 3.57% .  The only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was  UnitedHealth Care down $1.27 or 1.71%.

As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081.  Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  16.20 up from Tuesday's  trailing P/E ratio of 16.16 (last year it was 15.02);  Wednesday's   P/E estimate is  13.85 unchanged  from yesterday's    P/E estimate of 13.85  (year ago it was 12.95) and today's  dividend yield is 2.41 down   from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.42  (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94   on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2041.39 up 19.17  from Tuesday's closing numerator of  2022.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.05 up 64 cents    from Tuesday's average of $67.41.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $70.08 (DIS/UNH) down 57 cents  from Tuesday's median closing price of $70.65. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,917  ($204,139 - $202,222) .

MarketWatch 9/18/13 Wed. 4:02 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks climbed to record highs on Wednesday and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield delayed 10_YEAR -5.44% fell 15 basis points to 2.7% after the Federal Reserve unexpectedly abstained from trimming its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases. "It's like being at a party and more beer shows up. It's a big surprise. No taper was not priced in, and you can see that by the market's reaction," said Eric Davidson, deputy chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.95% was up 147.21 points, or 1%, at 15,676.94. The S&P 500 index SPX +1.22% added 20.71 points, or 1.2%, to 1,725.52. Both indexes surpassed their Aug. 2 records, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.01% traded at a 13-year high, up 37.94 points, or 1%, at 3,783.64

MarketWatch 9/17/13 Tues. 4:19 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks    rose on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 index finishing above 1,700 for the first time since early August, after Microsoft Corp. hiked its dividend and as Wall Street awaited the next day’s monetary-policy decision from the Federal Reserve.“After five months, the market is getting comfortable with the fact that the Fed will taper. The economic data have been okay, and Microsoft certainly helped today,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners in Chicago. The two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting started Tuesday, with a policy decision expected at 2 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday. Most market participants expect the Fed to cut its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, otherwise known as quantitative easing, by $10 billion to $15 billion, although some believe the move may come later in the year. The central bank’s stimulus is credited with helping the S&P 500’s roughly 150% rebound from its March 2009 low. “The economic data for the last three years have been okay, and it’s been hotly debated whether QE has been of benefit or not to the economy. Withdrawing it over a period of time makes sense, to allow the economy to adjust to it,” said Nolte. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.23% climbed 34.95 points, or 0.2%, to 15,529.73, with Alcoa Inc. AA +1.98% and Intel Corp. INTC +1.50%  pacing gains that included 19 of its 30 components.
Less than five points from its Aug. 2 record, the S&P 500 Index SPX +0.42%  rose 7.16 points, or 0.4%, to 1,704.76, with technology and consumer discretionary pacing gains and materials the sole decliner among its 10 major industry groups. Shares of Microsoft MSFT +0.39%  rose 0.4% after the Dow component and world’s biggest software company hiked its quarterly payment to shareholders by 22% and set a $40 billion share-repurchase plan.Mosaic Co. MOS -1.21%  fell 1.2% after the fertilizer producer reduced its quarterly outlook for potash and phosphate sales and prices. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.75% rose 27.85 points, or 0.8%, to 3,745.70.The worst reason for the Federal Reserve to taper its bond purchases is because it thinks the economy has improved; it hasn’t, says Rex Nutting. The best reason to taper QE3 is to improve the Fed's forward guidance. Advancing issues outran those declining by a more-than 2-to-1 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange, where 577 million shares traded. Composite volume approached 2.8 billion.Stocks retained their gains after a report had confidence among home builders remaining near an eight-year high.  “We’ve been wringing our hands about higher interest rates, but like the rest of the economy, housing continues to do okay. Real estate is a funky market to make generalizations about; there are markets doing extremely well and markets that are struggling,” said Nolte at Dearborn Partners.A Labor Department report Tuesday had the cost of living remaining tame in August, up 0.1% after a 0.2% rise the month before.Inflation is “kind of non-existent at this point. There is inflation writing checks for colleges and paying for medicine, but outside of that, when you look at copper prices, oil prices or even food prices, all of those are down year over year,” Nolte said.On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the cost of crude CLV3 -1.00%   dropped $1.17, or 1.1%, to $105.42 a barrel, a four-week low, while the value of gold GCZ3 -0.58%  fell $8.40, or 0.6%, to $1,309.40 an ounce. The U.S. dollar DXY -0.16%  fell against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners and the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR -0.84%  fell 2 basis points to 2.85%. On Monday, stocks mostly rose after Larry Summers took his name out of the running to head the Federal Reserve.
