The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14937.48 up 6.61 or 0.04%   from Wednesday's close of 14930.87. Of  the Dow components  15   gained and  15    declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was IBM up $1.02 and percentage-wise was  UnitedHealth up 0.94% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  and percentage-wise was Home Depot down $1.15 or 1.55 %.


As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's  trailing P/E ratio is  15.47 unchanged from Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.47 (last year it was 14.46);  Thursday's   P/E estimate is  13.47 unchanged  from Wednesday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.47  (year ago it was 12.42) and Thursday's  dividend yield is 2.50 up   from Wednesday's opening dividend yield of 2.49  (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1945.10 up 0.86  from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1944.24. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.84 up 3 cents    from Wednesday's average of $64.81.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.67 (DIS/UNH) up 44 cents  from Wednesday's median closing price of $67.23. MarketWatch 9/5/13 Thurs. 4:00 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Thursday ended higher for a third day, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.04% posting its longest winning streak since the middle of July, as investors looked to the morning's monthly jobs report. "Friday's numbers will be closely watched, as that might influence the administration of the taper program," said Jim Russell, senior equity strategist for US Bank Wealth Management, referring to signals from the Federal Reserve that it would start easing monetary stimulus later this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 6.61 points at 14,937.48. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.12% added 2 points, or 0.1%, to 1,655.08. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.27% climbed 9.74 points, or 0.3%, to 3,658.78.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:   The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 14930.87 up 96.91 or 0.65%   from Tuesday's close of 14833.96. For the year the Dow is up 13.94%. IBD pA2 "Electronics, techs flourish as Nasdaq leads advance" by David Saito-Chung says the market was up due to downward strength and further sector rotation into tech stocks as the action was up sharply in mixed trade and the current outlook is the market is in correction.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1944.24 up 12.62  from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1931.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. MarketWatch 9/4/13 Wed. 4:01 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Wednesday closed higher for a second session as investors anticipated votes on Capitol Hill on U.S. moves in Syria while tracking economic reports for clues to the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. "Most people believe it's a foregone conclusion that something will happen," Ron Florence, deputy chief investment officer for investment strategy, Wells Fargo Bank, said of the view that the Fed would start cutting monetary stimulus later this month. "Investors need to pay attention to the fact we're gong to be in a sustained and rising interest-rate environment for a while and that changes the game, or the way you manage your fixed income portfolio," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.65% was up 96.91 points, or 0.7%, at 14,930.87. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.81% gained 13.31 points, or 0.8%, to 1,653.08. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.01% rose 36.43 points, or 1%, to 3,649.04.
