Post No. 2,357 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's News Daily, Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times & USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 14922.50 down 14.98 or 0.10% from Thursday's close of 14937.48. For the year the Dow is 13.88% Of the Dow components 14 gained, GE was unchanged and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was McDonald's up 60 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.36% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.12 and percentage-wise was DuPont down 0.87%.
IBD pB8 "Stocks erratic but end flat; three leaders form bases" by Paul Whitfield says stocks swerved Fri ad Friday's action saw stocks go down, up and then flat in rising volume as the current outlook is the market is in correction.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.57 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.58 (last year it was 14.74); Monday's P/E estimate is 13.43 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 13.47 (year ago it was 12.55) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36 on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1943.15 down 1.95 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1945.10. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $6477 down 7 cents from Thursday's average of $64.84. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.73 (DIS/UNH) up 6 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $67.67. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $195 ($194,510 - $194,315) .
