9/4/13 Wed pm Dow Closes at 14930.87 Up 96.91 or 0.65%

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 14930.87 up 96.91 or 0.65%   from Tuesday's close of 14833.96. Of  the Dow components  17   gained and  3    declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was Boeing up $1.36 and percentage-wise was Intel up 2.57 % .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down 83 cents and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 2.15 %.


As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  15.47 up from Tuesday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.45 (last year it was 14.44);  Wednesday's   P/E estimate is  13.47 unchanged  from Tuesday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.47  (year ago it was 12.42) and Wednesday's  dividend yield is 2.49 down   from Tuesday's opening dividend yield of 2.54  (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1944.24 up 12.62  from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1931.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.81 up 32 cents    from Tuesday's average of $64.39.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.23 (DIS/UNH) up 48 cents  from Tuesday's median closing price of $66.75. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,262  ($194,424 - $193,162) .

MarketWatch 9/4/13 Wed. 4:01 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Wednesday closed higher for a second session as investors anticipated votes on Capitol Hill on U.S. moves in Syria while tracking economic reports for clues to the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. "Most people believe it's a foregone conclusion that something will happen," Ron Florence, deputy chief investment officer for investment strategy, Wells Fargo Bank, said of the view that the Fed would start cutting monetary stimulus later this month. "Investors need to pay attention to the fact we're gong to be in a sustained and rising interest-rate environment for a while and that changes the game, or the way you manage your fixed income portfolio," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.65% was up 96.91 points, or 0.7%, at 14,930.87. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.81% gained 13.31 points, or 0.8%, to 1,653.08. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.01% rose 36.43 points, or 1%, to 3,649.04.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14833.96 up 23.65 or 0.16%   from Friday's close of 14810.31. For the year the Dow is up 13.20%. Of  the Dow components  16   gained and  14    declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was United Technologies up $2.56 or 2.56 % .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Microsoft down $1.52 or 4.55%.

MSFT -0.22%  and Verizon Communications Inc. VZ -0.13%  weighed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average following major acquisitions by both industry giants.“We’re looking at two days of trading wrapped into one.
