The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15328.20 up 55.04 or 0.36%%   from Wednesday's close of 15273.26. Of  the Dow components   21  gained and  9  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Visa up $2.00 and percentage-wise was Nike up 2.06% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Intel down 29 cents or 1.22%.

As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's  trailing P/E ratio is  15.93 down from Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.99 (last year it was 14.61);  Thursday's   P/E estimate is  14.25 unchanged  from yesterday's     P/E estimate of 14.25  (year ago it was 12.95) and today's  dividend yield is 2.45 up   from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.44  (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94   on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

MarketWatch 9/26/13 Thurs. 4:27 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose on Thursday, with the S&P 500 rebounding from its longest losing streak this year, as a larger-than-expected drop in jobless claims mostly overrode worries about a budget standoff on Capitol Hill.“The strong jobs data were constructive, but we think it’s going to be a nervous period for risk assets. Washington is going to be driving the bus really for the next few weeks,” said Jim Russell, senior equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management. There is “fear about a possible government shutdown and a very contentious debate is likely over the debt ceiling. If the past is any guide, this is going to be a food fight like no other, and it will not put America in the best light on the global stage,” Russell said.
But the likely volatility that comes with Wall Street reacting to headlines out of Washington does represent an opportunity for investors. “At the end of the day, you have to fund the government, you have to raise the debt ceiling, so if markets decline due to short-term issues, buy good quality names on sale,” Russell advised. After a five-session losing streak, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.36%  rallied as much as 113.9 points, and ended with a gain of 55.04 points, or 0.4%, to 15,328.30.Also up after a five-session drop, the S&P 500 index SPX +0.35% climbed 5.90 points, or 0.4%, to 1,698.67, with telecommunications pacing gains that included all but utilities among its 10 major industry sectors.Equities came off session highs after House Speaker John Boehner said on Thursday that his party will push for a bill that will tie increasing the debt ceiling — and continue funding the government past Oct. 1 — to more cuts in federal spending. The comments by the Ohio Republican did not completely derail market gains as the S&P 500 rebounded from its longest stretch of losses since late December. Stocks got a second wind after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said his chamber plans to have a stopgap budget bill finished by Sunday.Stocks are not far from all time-highs “while being held hostage to the dysfunction in Washington,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets.

A strong opening came in response to near-term oversold conditions, Hogan said. “Although it hasn’t been deep, the sellout was long,” he said.“I think the debt ceiling [will be] raised; I don’ think we’re going to see a default,” said Chris Gaffney, senior vice president and senior market strategist at EverBank Wealth Management.
The Senate on Wednesday moved toward advancing a bill that would keep the government open after Monday without wiping out funding from the health-care law. Also Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew told Congress the Treasury will only have $30 billion in cash by Oct. 17, putting the nation on the brink of default.Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. BBBY -0.03%  rose 4.5% after hiking the low end of its 2013 earnings outlook. J.C. Penney Co. JCP -4.51%  rose 3% after the retailer fought back against critics. Hertz Global Holdings Inc. HTZ +0.42% dropped 16% after trimming its outlook.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.70%  gained 26.33 points, or 0.7%, to 3,787.43.

MarketWatch 9/25/13 Wed. 4:30 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks dropped on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 index recording its longest decline since December, as a possible government shutdown overrode better-than-forecast economic reports.“It’s been a very good year for the stock market, but people are pausing to worry about what is going on in Washington. One of the few things you can say about the stock market is it hates uncertainty,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.Down for a fifth session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.40% lost 61.33 points, or 0.4%, at 15,273.26. The S&P 500 SPX -0.27%   also fell for a fifth session, closing down 4.65 points, or 0.3%, to 1,692.77, with health care losing the most and financials the best performing among its 10 major industry groups. The loss streak is the longest since Dec. 28, a time that had Wall Street fretting as politicians argued over combined spending cuts and tax hikes dubbed the “fiscal cliff.” The index is up nearly 19% for the year. The Senate voted 100-0 on Wednesday to pass a stopgap spending measure, with Democrats planning to get rid of language from the House version that would remove funding of the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Without an accord to hasten Senate consideration of the bill, a vote on its passage could come as late as Sunday, giving the House one day to move before spending authority lapses. Separately, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew told legislators that the measures now being deployed to not surpass the debt ceiling will be unworkable by Oct. 17 at the latest.“It’s like going on a long road trip, and then arguing about whether you’re going to stop for gas or not. I have some sympathy for Secretary Lew who is looking at the gas indicator, which is on E, and he doesn’t know how many more miles he can go without it,” said Kelly. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT -0.05%  paced blue-chip losses, its shares off 1.5% after Bloomberg News reported the discount retailer was reducing orders with suppliers this quarter and next to deal with climbing inventories. A Wal-Mart spokesperson told MarketWatch the report is “completely false.”J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM +0.02%   led advancers on the Dow, its shares up 2.7%, after the Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal report the bank and government officials were in discussions to settled federal and state mortgage investigations. After four years struggling to attract students, interest in full-time M.B.A. programs – the bread and butter of business schools – is heating up. Melissa Korn reports on the News Hub.J.C. Penney Co. JCP -0.49%  fell to a nearly 13-year low, leading S&P 500 losses with a 15% drop, after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. projected sales at the department-store chain would improve at a slower-than-anticipated pace and raised questions about the retailer’s liquidity. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.19% lost 7.16 points, or 0.2%, to 3,761.10.Advancers remained just ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 641 million shares traded. Composite volume approached 3.2 billion. The Treasury market continues to benefit from the risk-taking confusion, with benchmark yields down to their lowest level since the middle of August, while the dollar was near its weakest point against other global currencies since February, Peter Boockvar, chief market strategist at The Lindsey Group, noted in emailed commentary.Treasury prices mostly gained, with the yield on the 10-year note 10_YEAR -1.35% used in determining mortgage rates and other consumer borrowing costs down 4 basis points to 2.621%. The dollar DXY -0.33% lost ground against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners, including the euro EURUSD +0.39%  and the yen USDJPY -0.31% .Energy costs fell for a fifth session, with crude-oil futures for November delivery CLX3 -0.87%  falling 47 cents, or 0.5%, to finish at $102.66 a barrel.Gold futures GCZ3 +1.36% for December delivery rose $19.90, or 1.5%, to settle at $1,336.20 an ounce, marking their first gain in four sessions. On Wednesday, stock-index futures offered no discernible reaction to data that had orders for U.S. durable goods unexpectedly bouncing back last month on demand for autos.Stocks only briefly cut their losses after the Commerce Department reported new-home sales rose last month after an unexpected drop in July.“It’s a tug of war. I think that is going to be the case for a while as no one is sure what will happen with the possible government shutdown, which is being contrasted with reasonable economic data,” Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edwards Jones, of the current volatility in equities.
