Post No. 2,448 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's News Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; and Saturday's New York Times & Atllanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Fri. at 15961.70 up 85.48 or 0.54% from Thursday's close of 15876.22. For the week the Dow was up 199.92 or 1.27% from last Friday's close of 15,761.78. For the year the Dow is up 21.81%. Of the Dow components 25 gained and 5 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Exxon up $2.05 or 2.2 % . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's down 64 cents or 0.66%.
IBD pB8 "Stock indexes add gains; IBD 50 up 4% for week" by Ken Shreve says the Dow and the S&P capped their 6th straight week of gains as Friday's action was options expiration sees gains in mixed vol while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
FT p13 "ExxonMobil buoyed after Buffett buys $3.45bn stake" says the US hedge fund managers have zoned in on the consumer sector in 3Q.
Sat. WSJ pB5 "DJIA gains sixth week in row to a record" by Matt Jarzemsky says belief that Fed stimulus won't soon end outweighs soft manufacturing data. Exxon Mobil gained $2.05 after Berkshire said it bought a $3.45 bil stake in it.
Sat. NYT pB2 "Dow and S&P gain for a sixth week" by Reuters says the Dow & S&P hit highs for a 6th straight week of gains.
AJC pA10 "S&P steady rise continues" by AP says investors stayed upbeat Fri pushing US stock indexes deeper into record territory due to prospects for further stimulus from the Fed.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.88 up from Friday's trailing P/E of 17.78 (last year it was 13.75). Monday's P/E estimate is 15.02 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.70 (year ago it was 11.99) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.10 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.15 (last year it was 2.81). The Dow's all-time high was 15,961.70 on November 15, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2485.49 up 13.31 from Thursday's closing numerator of 2472.18. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.85 up 44 cents from Thursday's average closing price of 82.41. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.62 (HD/WMT & NKE/) up 61 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $79.01 (HD/WMT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,331 ($248,549 - $247,218).

by Victor Reklaitis says U.S.stocks stepped higher on Friday, lifting the S&P

Reserve’s stimulus efforts.The S&P 500 index

tacked on 13.23 points, or 0.3%, to end at 3,985.97. The tech-heavy
index gained 1.7% for the week, posting its first up week in three
weeks. It has risen for six straight sessions. On Friday, the market also absorbed some softer-than-expected economic
data, such as a weaker-than-anticipated reading on New York state
manufacturing, a dip in industrial production and a bigger-than-expected
drop in import prices. At a confirmation hearing on Thursday, Yellen, the nominee to lead the
Fed, defended the central bank’s aggressive bond-buying program, known
as quantitative easing or QE, and tried to ease concerns that bubbles were forming in the equity markets. That boosted stocks globally on Thursday
and continued to contribute to positive sentiment on Friday. “Bulls
have been given a boost by dovish comments this week from Fed
chair nominee Janet Yellen, indicating that she believes the Fed has
more work to do in order to strengthen the economy and suggesting that
QE may continue for some time to come,” said Colin Cieszynski, senior
market analyst at CMC Markets, in emailed comments on Friday.“Soft
Empire manufacturing and industrial production data this morning
support the case for delayed tapering,” Cieszynski added, referring to
when the Fed might reduce its bond-buying program that has boosted
stocks. He said reports of Chinese reforms have “also encouraged traders.”
-
Friday’s key headlines:
A manufacturing index produced by the New York Fed unexpectedly turned negative. In addition, industrial production dipped 0.1% in October, slightly worse than forecasts, and prices paid for imported goods declined more than expected. In China, the reforms include a loosening of the one-child rule, an abolition of re-education through labor and easing of controls on prices for energy, water, telecom and other services.
-
The buzz:
Don’t get too caught up in the all-time highs is what Steve Rees, head of U.S. equity strategy for J.P. Morgan Private Bank, suggested when asked about the record closes
for the Dow and S&P 500. “We’re not as focused on the charts. We’re
looking at the fundamentals of the equity markets,” he said in a phone
interview on Friday. His team is “still very comfortable” being
overweight U.S. equities and expects corporate earnings will improve in
2014. FactSet said the S&P 500 forward 12-month price-to-earnings
ratio reached 15.0 as of Thursday’s close, above that valuation metric’s
five-year average of 13.0 and its 10-year average of 14.0. But that’s
below its 15-year average of 16.2 and its peak level of 25 hit in the
late 1990s and early 2000s.
