11/7/13 Thurs. am Disney Reports Today

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,436 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Thursday's  Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times,  Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15746.88 up 128.66 or 0.82% from Tuesday's close of 15618.22. For the year the Dow is up 20.17%. Of  the Dow components  26   gained  and   4  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Chevron up $2.69 and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 4.2% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was  Boeing down 48 cents and percentage-wise was Pfizer down 0.86%.

WSJ pC4 "Shares get push from Fed" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks rose with the Dow setting another record on increasing investor hopes for cont'd easy money policies from the Fed.

NYT pB10 "Microsoft helps lift the Dow as investors await new data" by AP says the Dow set another record Wed bolstered by Microsoft as it led a fair part of the market higher.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Jason Abbruzzese says the equity market was buoyed by improved corp results and a host of initial public offerings, with 6 new issues expected tos tart trading Wed, a day ahead of Twitter's IPO.  Microsoft gained 4.2% due to Nomura's Rich Sherlund increasing his share price forecast to $45 to $40.

IBD pB2 "Biotechs weigh on Nasdaq as key indexes end mixed" by Ken Shreve says some key indexes turned in decent gains Wed but the Nasdaq underperformed weighed down by weak action in biotech and more selling in certain growth names.  Wed's action saw NYSE indexes end near highs,  mild distribution for Nasdaq as the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio is  17.66 up  from Wednesday's  trailing P/E of 17.51  (last year it was 14.16).  Thursday's   P/E estimate is  14.70 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 14.70  (year ago it was 12.37) and today's  dividend yield is 2.13 down from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.14  (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 15,746.88   on November 6, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2452.04 up 20.03   from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2432.01. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.73 up 66 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of 81.07.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.46 (NKE/WMT) up 16 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $77.30 (NKE/WMT).  The lowest volume was  3Ms and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,003   ($245,204 - $243,201).

MarketWatch 11/6/13 Wed. 4:45 pm by Victor Reklaitis says  U.S. stocks finished mostly higher on Wednesday, with the Dow industrials achieving a closing high as blue-chip Microsoft jumped 4%.
The gains came after European equities advanced, helped by factors such as a strong reading on U.K. factories and hopes the European Central Bank may take further easing measures on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.82%  climbed 128.66 points, or 0.8%, to end at 15,746.88, topping its prior record close on Oct. 29. The blue-chip index also achieved an intraday record of 15,750.29, finishing just below that level. Microsoft MSFT -0.26% performed best among Dow components, gaining on news of progress in its search for a new CEO.The broader S&P 500 SPX +0.43%  advanced 7.52 points, or 0.4%, to close at 1,770.49. The benchmark index was on track to top its Oct. 29 record close, but didn’t manage to do so after paring some gains. It also held below its intraday peak of 1,775.22, which it hit Oct. 30. Consumer staples and utilities fared best among S&P sectors Wednesday, while consumer discretionary and health care underperformed. But Microsoft couldn’t lift the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.20% , which erased an earlier gain. The tech-heavy index closed down by 7.92 points, or 0.2%, at 3,931.95, as heavyweight Apple Inc. AAPL -0.20%  dipped 0.3%. Social-media stocks also weighed on the Nasdaq.  Polya Lesova takes a look at which stocks traders will be watching during market action, including Tesla, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Time Warner. Photo: Getty Images.Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, said the U.K. factories report helped overseas markets, but “there’s no real U.S.-related event” that inspired the bulls. He suggested the “underlying backdrop” for stocks is just staying positive. In addition to Wednesday’s advances, he pointed to stocks paring most of their losses by Tuesday’s close.
“That’s indicative of a market that’s biased to grind upward,” Luschini said.Sandven at U.S. Bank also emphasized an encouraging environment for stocks. He cited factors such as a generally positive third-quarter earnings season and constructive investor sentiment, as well as fair valuations and continued expectations the Federal Reserve will hold off until March to taper its bond-buying program. But Sandven also sounded a cautious note, saying a pullback of about 4% for the S&P 500 to its 50-day moving average, a key chart level, would be constructive. Sandven added that might not happen in November or December, given the market generally performs well in those months.
“I just think we’re a little bit ahead of ourselves,” he said. “A modest pullback would be healthy.”
Wednesday’s U.S. economic calendar was light. An index of leading economic indicators for September rose 0.7%, matching expectations.Ahead of the week’s highlight — Friday’s jobs report — investors will be focused on the ECB meeting and U.S. GDP data, both expected on Thursday. Some economists anticipate that some sort of easing measures will be announced by the ECB, though most are not expecting an interest-rate cut until December.Social-media company Twitter Inc. TWTR 0.00%  is expected to price its initial public offering late Wednesday. In a MarketWatch poll, 49% of respondents said they would like to buy Twitter shares. On the earnings front, shares of Tesla Motors Inc. TSLA -0.32% dived and triggered a short-sale circuit-breaker after the electric-car maker only delivered 5,500 Model S units in the third quarter. The stock closed down 14.5%. Humana Inc. HUM -0.03% rose 2% after the health insurer’s quarterly report indicated that membership continued to increase, while Abercrombie & Fitch ANF -0.09% fell 13.5% after the teen-apparel retailer late Tuesday said same-store sales sank. European stocks rallied, recouping prior-day losses, with the euro zone composite and services purchasing managers’ indexes climbing from initial estimates reported for October. Asia markets were mixed, with a weaker yen supporting Tokyo stocks.
Gold and oil prices were higher, while the dollar fell.
