Post No. 2,435 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15746.88 up 128.66 or 0.82% from Tuesday's close of 15618.22. Of the Dow components 26 gained and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron up $2.69 and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 4.2% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Boeing down 48 cents and percentage-wise was Pfizer down 0.86%.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.51 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 17.54 (last year it was 14.47); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.70 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 14.70 (year ago it was 12.37) and today's dividend yield is 2.14 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.14 (last year it was 2.56). The Dow's all-time high was 15,746.88 on November 6, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2452.04 up 20.03 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2432.01. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.73 up 66 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of 81.07. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.46 (NKE/WMT) up 16 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $77.30 (NKE/WMT). The lowest volume was 3Ms and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,003 ($245,204 - $243,201).
MarketWatch 11/6/13 Wed. 4:45 pm by Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks finished mostly higher on Wednesday, with the Dow industrials achieving a closing high as blue-chip Microsoft jumped 4%.
The gains came after European equities advanced, helped by factors such as a strong reading on U.K. factories and hopes the European Central Bank may take further easing measures on
Thursday. Strategists said there was no specific U.S. headline that
triggered buying, suggesting the backdrop for stocks simply remains
supportive.The Dow Jones Industrial Average

1,775.22, which it hit Oct. 30. Consumer staples and utilities fared
best among S&P sectors Wednesday, while consumer discretionary and
health care underperformed. But Microsoft couldn’t lift the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite

positive. In addition to Wednesday’s advances, he pointed to stocks
paring most of their losses by Tuesday’s close.
“That’s indicative of a market that’s biased to grind upward,” Luschini said.Sandven at U.S. Bank also emphasized an encouraging environment for
stocks. He cited factors such as a generally positive third-quarter
earnings season and constructive investor sentiment, as well as fair
valuations and continued expectations the Federal Reserve will hold off
until March to taper its bond-buying program. But Sandven also sounded a cautious note, saying a pullback of about 4%
for the S&P 500 to its 50-day moving average, a key chart level,
would be constructive. Sandven added that might not happen in November
or December, given the market generally performs well in those months.
“I just think we’re a little bit ahead of ourselves,” he said. “A modest pullback would be healthy.”
Wednesday’s U.S. economic calendar was light. An index of leading
economic indicators for September rose 0.7%, matching expectations.Ahead of the week’s highlight — Friday’s jobs report — investors will be
focused on the ECB meeting and U.S. GDP data, both expected on
Thursday. Some economists anticipate that some sort of easing measures
will be announced by the ECB, though most are not expecting an
interest-rate cut until December.Social-media company Twitter Inc.
