Post No. 2,488 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013  and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16167.97 up 292.71 or 1.84% from  Tuesday's  close of 15875.26. Of  the Dow components  29  gained and only Boeing   declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was 3M up $4.41 or 3.36% .  The only and therefore  biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Boeing down 39 cents or 0.29% .

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2517.61 up 45.58 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2472.03. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6  of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.30 down from yesterday's  trailing P/E of 16.31  (last year it was 14.84).  Today's   P/E estimate is  14.98 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.98   (year ago it was 12.59) and today's  dividend yield is  2.16 unchanged from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.16  (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 16,167.97 on December 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.92 up $1.47 from  Tuesday's average closing price of $82.45.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.93   (HD/WMT/) down 49 cents from Monday's median closing price of $78.42.     (HD/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $4,558  ($251,761 - $247,203).

MarketWatch 12/18/13 Wed. 5:34 pm by Anora Mahmudova says  two U.S. stock indexes notched record closing levels on Wednesday as markets interpreted the Federal Reserve’s decision to begin the tapering of bond purchases in January as confidence in the underlying strength of the economy and welcomed its commitment to low rates for a considerable time.
The Fed policy makers voted to reduce monthly asset purchases to $75 billion from $85 billion, citing improvement in the outlook for the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 soared to close at all-time highs. The Dow DJIA +1.84%  added 293 points, or 1.8%, to 16,167.97, topping its prior record close on Nov. 27. The S&P 500 index SPX +1.67%  rose 30 points, or 1.7% to 1,810.65, surpassing its previous record close on Dec. 9. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.15%  was up 16 points or 1.1% to 4,070.66.
Financials and health-care sectors led the gains on the S&P 500. The Nasdaq’s rally was hampered by Apple Inc., AAPL -0.02%  which fell 0.8%.
The Federal Open Market Committee stressed its commitment to low short-term interest rates well after bond purchases end altogether and added new language that it plans to maintain the target Fed funds rates “well past the time that the unemployment rate declines below 6.5%.”
Earlier, housing starts data showed construction of new homes soared to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.09 million in November in the fastest pace since February 2008, signaling that the housing market’s recovery is shaking off rising mortgage rates. The government reported surges in construction of both single-family homes and apartments.
Better-than-expected housing data sent the S&P 500 home builders index up 4.8%, as Lennar Corp. LEN +6.34% , D.R. Horton, Inc DHI -0.30% and PulteGroup, Inc PHM +2.16% were among the best-performing stocks on Wednesday.
In other markets:
“Everyone was focusing on the wrong animal, they were betting on whether the Fed is hawkish or dovish, but they missed the fact that the Fed is bullish on the economy,” said Burt White, chief investment officer at LPL Financial.
“Essentially the Fed made a trade: it traded liquidity—or shaving off $10 billion a month—for a boost in confidence. Changing the unemployment expectations to 6.5% it committed to keeping low raters for longer,” he added.
  • Comment : Joe Bell, senior equity analyst with Schaeffer’s Investment Research thinks markets are rewarding the clarity: “It is a good sign that markets are reacting positively to news that the economy is in a good shape and improving. The Fed’s decision is data driven, so if it decided to taper it is because it is confident about the recovery in the economy.”
  • Wednesday’s movers & shakers: Lennar Corp. LEN +6.34%  shares rose 6.3% after fiscal fourth-quarter profits and revenues beat estimates. Shares of Jabil Circuit, Inc JBL +2.04% fell 20.5% after earnings and outlook fell short of Wall Street’s expectations. Ford Motor Co    shares slid 6.3% as the car maker lowered its 2014 outlook. Target Corp.TGT -0.47% shares rose 3.1% after the retailer’s chief executive, Gregg Steinhafel, said he was pleased with Target’s holiday performance and introduced a round of “last minute” sales. Shares in Apple Inc AAPL -0.02%  dropped 0.8% hampering gains on the Nasdaq Composite. General Mills, Inc GIS -0.72%  recovered after dropping more than 2% as second-quarter earnings disappointed. AMCAMC +0.32% gained 9.2% on the day after debuting on the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday morning. The initial public offering priced shares of the movie theater company at $18 a piece.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2472.03 down 1.45   from Monday's closing numerator of 2473.48. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "Dow gets tapered by Fed" by Kaitlyn Kiernan says stocks fell as investors awaited the Fed's decision to continue stimulus. Boeing was up $1.16 after its board authorized a 50% increase to its dividend and $10 bil to buy back shares.

AJC pA17 "Stocks slip on taper drama" by AP says the market edged lower as the Fed started a 2 day meeting that may be the end of economic stimulus.

FT p21 "3M climbs after joining list of blue chips lifting capital returns" says 3M joined GE and Boeing in announcing a rise in its dividend.  AT&T said it would sell its wireline operations in Ct to Frontier Comm for $2 bil in cash.

NYT pB5 "Awaiting the Fed's decision, the market drops slightly" by Reuters says  investors expect the Fed to stop its stimulus program.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.40 down 5 cents from  Monday's average closing price of $82.45.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.93   (HD/WMT/) down 49 cents from Monday's median closing price of $78.42.     (HD/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $145  ($247,348 - $247,203).

MarketWatch 12/17/13 Tues. 4:40 pm by Anora Mahmudova says  US stocks closed the volatile session lower on Tuesday as markets digested a slew of economic data and focused on the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision on the fate of the stimulus program.
Indexes attempted to break higher in the afternoon and briefly succeeded, but sold off in the last hour. Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.06%  closed down nine points to 15,875.26. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.31%  closed 5 points, or 0.3% lower to 1,781.00. The benchmark index was down five days out of past six sessions. Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.15%  was down six points, or 0.1, to 4,023.68.
After a big run in recent months and a small correction last week, markets are now reflecting on the outcome of the Fed meeting,” said Colin Cieszynski, senior market analyst at CMC Markets.
“Markets have priced in a 10% chance of a December taper, but most analysts do not think it will happen until early next year. Even if they decide to start the taper in December it will be modest, so the Fed can test the waters. While unemployment figures may warrant it, inflation is still below what the Fed would like it to be,” he added.
Investors digested a slew of economic data to assess how and when the Fed will decide to begin reducing its $85 billion a month stimulus program, which added more than $1 trillion to its balance sheet over the past year. The Fed is expected to announce its decision on Wednesday afternoon.
Prices of consumer goods did not change from the previous months, leaving the inflation rate on the annualized base at 1.2%, still below the Fed target, making its decision to start the taper sooner rather than later more difficult. The U.S. current-account deficit narrowed to $94.8 billion in the third quarter, marking the lowest level since Fall 2009, the government said Tuesday.
