Post No. 2,466 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15821.51 down 68.26 or 0.43% from Wednesday's close of 15889.77. Of the Dow components gained and declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.23 and percentage-wise was Intel up 2.19% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $3.14 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 2.41%.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.32 down from yesterday's trailing P/E of 16.34 (last year it was 14.52). Today's P/E estimate is 15.12 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.12 (year ago it was 12.35) and today's dividend yield is 2.15 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.13 (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 16,097.33 on November 27, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2463.66 down 10.65 from Wednsday's closing numerator of 2474.29. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.12 down 36 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $82.48. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.20 (NKE/WMT/) down 32 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.52. (NKE/WMT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,065 ( $247,429 - $246,366).

While an improving economy helps the market over the longer run,
encouraging data has been weighing on stocks in recent sessions as
traders worry the central bank could act soon to pare back its bond
buys. Strategists also have said the market simply has been due for a
pullback after a year-to-date gain of 25% for the S&P 500.The week’s most significant economic report is expected Friday, when the
government releases its monthly jobs report. Economists polled by
MarketWatch anticipate the U.S. economy added 180,000 jobs in November,
but some forecasts may be rising given recent encouraging data.“We’re likely to hear ‘whisper numbers’ closer to 200,000 today and
tomorrow,” said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG, in an
emailed note.

Today’s market-moving news:
The Labor Department said the number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 last week to 298,000, better than forecasts for a rise to 325,000. The Commerce Department said the U.S. economy expanded at a 3.6% annual pace in the third quarter, topping expectations
for 3.2% growth. Lockhart did not say whether he supported a move to
taper at the next Fed meeting on Dec. 17-18, but he said market
expectations that the asset-purchase program will be wound down over the coming year were “reasonable.”

European stocks closed broadly lower
after strong U.S. growth data stirred tapering fears and as European
Central Bank President Mario Draghi addressed the state of the euro-zone
economy. Asian equities finished down, with Australia and Japan among the worst performers. Gold futures fell sharply, while crude oil rose. The dollar saw gains fade.

The buzz:
A recent sharp rise in the so-called fear gauge is likely to be short-lived, so there’s still room for a Santa Claus rally,
says a post at The Wall Street Journal’s MoneyBeat blog. A contributor
to MarketWatch’s Trading Deck is also sounding bullish, saying the market has significant support because of the tax implications of selling now.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, New York Times, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15889.77 down 24.85 or 0.16% from Tuesday's close of 15914.62. For the year the Dow is up 21.26%. Of the Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Visa up 99 cents and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 1.64% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Walmart down 99 cents or 1.22%.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks pull back yet again" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks fell for a 4th straight session due to concern the Fed may start paring stimulus efforts this month after a raft of economic reports.
NYT pB9 "Mixed close for market after upbeat jobs data" by Reuters says the market finished lower for the 4th straight session.
IBD pB2 "Nasdaq ekes out a gain, but retailers slump again" by David Saito-Chung says the major stock indexes finished mostly flat Wed on higher vol and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
AJC pA17 "Dow continues Dec. slide" by AP says the dow fell due to concern re: teh Fed's economic stimulus program.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2474.29 down 3.87 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2478.16.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.48 down 13 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $82.61. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.52 (NKE/WMT/) down 65 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $80.17 (NKE/WMT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $387 ( $247,816 - $247,429).
MarketWatch 12/4/13 Wed. 5:12 pm by Victor Reklaitis says US stocks ended mostly lower on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average extending their losing streak to four straight sessions. Upbeat economic reports appeared to reinforce worries that later this month the Federal Reserve could start to taper its bond-buying program that has supported equities. The main indexes had all moved into positive territory following a report of progress toward a U.S. budget deal, but those gains faded. Many strategists have been expecting a market pullback given recent advances. Last week, the S&P 500 achieved its eight straight weekly gain, and the benchmark index remains up 25.7% in the year to date. “The market has done exceptionally well and was bound to pull back sooner or later,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. The S&P 500 SPX -0.13% dipped 2.34 points, or 0.1%, to close at 1,792.81, retreating further below the milestone level of 1,800. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.16% fell 24.85 points, or 0.2%, to end at 15,889.77, staying below its own big round number of 16,000. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.02% bucked the negative trend, rising 0.80 point to finish at 4,038. The tech-heavy index snapped a two-day losing streak and held above the 4,000 level. On Tuesday, stocks lost ground on uncertainty over when the Fed will begin to pare its bond-buying program and on jitters about whether the market rally is overextended. Today’s market-moving news: Private-sector hiring in November was the hottest in a year, as 215,000 jobs were added, according to a report from Automatic Data Processing. In addition, a new-home-sales report beat forecasts, and the Fed’s Beige Book report was mostly encouraging, but a services gauge missed expectations. Upbeat economic data can weigh on equities if it reinforces worries the Fed could move as early as December to scale back its bond-buying program, even though an improving economy generally helps the market over the longer run. Meanwhile, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday that U.S. budget negotiators are near a deal in which Democrats would accept fresh revenue from user fees and Republicans would agree to more federal spending, steps that could avoid another government shutdown next year.
- Today’s movers & shakers: CF Industries Holdings Inc. shares CF -0.02% rallied 10.7% after the fertilizer maker indicated it may return more cash to shareholders and RBC Capital Markets started coverage with a sector perform rating. Express Inc. EXPR -21.76% tumbled 23% after the clothing retailer cut its full-year outlook. Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ -0.07% rose 2.3% after a positive Morgan Stanley report. See: Movers & Shakers column.
- The buzz: After a historic bull-market run, a notable group of analysts is warning that all of this could be a bubble that is about to pop, according to John Nyaradi, a contributor to MarketWatch’s Trading Deck. Another Trading Deck contributor, Kevin Marder, says it’s not “time to run for the hills,” but it is time to be “buying selectively.”
- Other markets: Japan’s Nikkei 225 JP:NIK -2.17% dropped 2.2% as the yen rebounded against the dollar. European stocks closed lower. Oil and gold both advanced.
