Post No. 2,497 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16294.61 up 73.47 or 0.45%, a record high, from Friday's close of 16221.14. For the year the Dow is up24.35 %. Of the Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.21 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 2.08% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble down 53 cents or 0.65%.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2537.33 up 11.44 from Friday's closing numerator of 2525.89. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks bask in merry glow" by Dan Strumpf says stocks rose to another record propelled by positive response tot he Fed's decision to start withdrawing its postcrisis stimulus.
NYT pB4 "Apple's China deal helps lift tech issues" by AP says stocks cont'd to climb in quiet trading on Mon.
IBD pB2 "Stocks add to their rally; leaders still acting well" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says stock market climbed heartily Monday as indexes added to their rally and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.62 up from Monday's closing trailing P/E of 16.54 (last year it was 14.60). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.01 unchanged from Monday's closing P/E estimate of 15.01 (year ago it was 12.65) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.09 down from Monday's closing dividend yield of 2.13 (last year it was 2.68). The Dow's all-time high was 16,294.61 on December 23, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.58 up 38 cents from Friday's average closing price of $84.20. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.22 (HD/WMT) up 11 cents from Friday's median closing price of $79.11. (HD/NKE). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,144 ($253,733 - $252,589).

jumped 44.16 points, or 1.1%, to 4,148.90, aided
by a substantial rally in its largest component, Apple Inc.Both the
S&P and the Dow industrials closed at record highs on Friday. In
the wake of a massive data breach, Target may have suffered
another blow—reduced customer traffic over one of the busiest shopping
weekends of the year. The number of transactions at Target slipped 3% to
4% compared with the final weekend before Christmas last year.Stocks
jumped last week when the Federal Reserve decided to begin
scaling back the size of its monthly bond purchases in January.Investors
“should remember that the Fed is reducing the pace of asset
purchases expressly due to a strengthening economy,” said Jerry Webman,
chief economist at Oppenheimer Funds, in a note.“Markets apparently get
that now, whereas last May, when the Fed first
indicated it was preparing to taper, the reaction was broadly negative
at first, though growth-oriented asset classes and subcategories
rebounded fairly quickly,” he said.
“I put early 2015 for when the Fed funds rate will lift off but that is
something that can change one way or another,” Lacker said.He also praised the central bank’s decision to reduce monthly asset
purchases from $85 billion to $75 billion, adding that the impending
departure of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke had “nothing at all” to do with
the decision to taper its stimulus program.
“Given the data, given the way the committee positioned itself over the
program. this decision was kind of a slam-dunk,” Lacker said during the
interview.

The International Monetary Fund’s managing director, Christine Lagarde,
said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the country’s economic growth
is picking up and that it is poised to accelerate as the business
climate sees more certainty in 2014. Adding to that sense of certainty
is a budget deal reached by Congress and clear communication from the
Federal Reserve about its plan to wind down its bond-buying program,
Lagarde said.
