Post No. 2,467 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, New York Times, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15821.51 down 68.26 or 0.43% from Wednesday's close of 15889.77. For the year the Dow is up 20.74%. Of the Dow components 10 gained and 20 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.23 and percentage-wise was Intel up 2.19% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $3.14 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 2.41%.
WSJ pC4 "Blue chips take the fifth day of losses" by Chris Dieterich says encouraging ecnomic data rekindle worres that the Fed will cut back on its easy money policies.
IBD pB2 "S&P 500 extends losses, but trading slows down" by Ken Shreve says the S&P extended its losing streak to 5 session on lower volume as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
NYT pB8 "Wall St. digests economic news with wary eye on Fed" & AJC pA15 "Dow on 5 day losing streak" by AP says the Dow fell due to concerns that the Fed is getting closer to reducing tis stimulus program due to encouraging economic news.
FT p25 "Apple hits one year high on reports of China Mobile talks" by jason Abbruzzese says US stocks fell modestly Thurs as a round of mixed data left investors unsure how long Fed will leave monetary stimulus in place.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.25 down from yesterday's trailing P/E of 16.32 (last year it was 14.55). Today's P/E estimate is 15.12 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.12 (year ago it was 12.35) and today's dividend yield is 2.19 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.15 (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 16,097.33 on November 27, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2463.66 down 10.65 from Wednsday's closing numerator of 2474.29. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.12 down 36 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $82.48. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.20 (NKE/WMT/) down 32 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.52. (NKE/WMT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,065 ( $247,429 - $246,366).

12/5/13 Thurs. 4:34 pm by Victor Reklaitis says US stocks
dropped on Thursday, slapping both the S&P

as better-than-expected readings on employment and economic growth
boosted bets that a stimulus reduction could come this month.Atlanta
Federal Reserve President Dennis Lockhart said a tapering of the
Federal Reserve’s bond-buying program that has supported equities
should be “on the table” in December.“The combined effect of these three
developments has sent U.S. indices

While
an improving economy helps the market over the longer run,
encouraging data has been weighing on stocks in recent sessions as
traders worry the central bank could act soon to pare back its bond
buys. Strategists also have said the market simply has been due for a
pullback after a year-to-date gain of 25% for the S&P 500.The
week’s most significant economic report is expected Friday, when the
government releases its monthly jobs report. Economists polled by
MarketWatch anticipate the U.S. economy added 180,000 jobs in November,
but some forecasts may be rising given recent encouraging data.“We’re
likely to hear ‘whisper numbers’ closer to 200,000 today and
tomorrow,” said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG, in an
emailed note.

Today’s market-moving news:
The Labor Department said the number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 last week to 298,000, better than forecasts for a rise to 325,000. The Commerce Department said the U.S. economy expanded at a 3.6% annual pace in the third quarter, topping expectations
for 3.2% growth. Lockhart did not say whether he supported a move to
taper at the next Fed meeting on Dec. 17-18, but he said market
expectations that the asset-purchase program will be wound down over the coming year were “reasonable.”

Central Bank President Mario Draghi addressed the state of the euro-zone
economy. Asian equities finished down, with Australia and Japan among the worst performers. Gold futures fell sharply, while crude oil rose. The dollar saw gains fade.
-
The buzz:
A recent sharp rise in the so-called fear gauge is likely to be short-lived, so there’s still room for a Santa Claus rally,
says a post at The Wall Street Journal’s MoneyBeat blog. A contributor
to MarketWatch’s Trading Deck is also sounding bullish, saying the market has significant support because of the tax implications of selling now.
