The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $173 ($251,934 - $251,761).
MarketWatch 12/19/13 Thurs. 4:30 pm by Anora Mahmudova says on Thursday recovered most earlier losses as investors shrugged off disappointing housing, manufacturing and employment reports, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a record closing. The Dow average DJIA +0.07% closed at its 46th record of the year, adding 11.11 points, or 0.1% to 16,179.08. It also hit an intraday record of 16,194.72. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.06% briefly ventured into positive territory but closed 1.05 point off its record close level at 1,809.60. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.29% closed lower, shedding 11.93 points, or 0.3%, to 4,058.13.What will the markets do now that the Fed has signaled its intention to keep the stimulus spigot going? Doug Coté, ING Investment
Weekly jobless claims rose to their highest level since late March, though the increase was likely due to seasonal ups and downs. Existing-home sales for
November slumped 4.3%, a third month of declines, to a seasonally
adjusted annual rate of 4.9 million, on higher mortgage rates and low
inventory. The Philadelphia Fed’s December manufacturing index rose to 7, but below the consensus view of 11. Leading indicators index for November rose to 98.3, showing modest expansion in the economy. The S&P 500 closed at a high on Wednesday as investors took the view
that a Fed tapering meant confidence in the economy and welcomed the
central bank’s commitment to low rates until the unemployment rate
declines well below 6.5%, especially if projected inflation remains
below the 2% target.
“This positive forward guidance on short-term interest rates appears to have offset any near-term concerns about tapering,” Gary Thayer, chief macro strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors, wrote in a note.
“This was probably an intentional decision by policymakers to smooth out the market impact of tapering,” he added.

A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
WSJ pC1 "Wednesday's Markets" by Matt Jarzemsky says the Dow posted their 3rd biggest rally of the year as investors took the Fed's modest trimming of its bond buying program as a sign the central bank will keep its easy money policies in place. The Dow closed at an all time high for the 45th time this year.
FT p21 "Wall Street" says US stocks edged up with markets on tenter hooks ahead of the Fed's last policy announcement of the year.

MarketWatch 12/18/13 Wed. 5:34 pm by Anora Mahmudova says two U.S. stock indexes notched record closing levels on Wednesday as markets interpreted the Federal Reserve’s decision to begin the tapering of bond purchases in January as confidence in the underlying strength of the economy and welcomed its commitment to low rates for a considerable time.
The Fed policy makers voted to reduce monthly asset purchases to $75 billion from $85 billion, citing improvement in the outlook for the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 soared to close at all-time highs. The Dow DJIA +1.84% added 293 points, or 1.8%, to 16,167.97, topping its prior record close on Nov. 27. The S&P 500 index SPX +1.67% rose 30 points, or 1.7% to 1,810.65, surpassing its previous record close on Dec. 9. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.15% was up 16 points or 1.1% to 4,070.66.
Financials and health-care sectors led the gains on the S&P 500. The Nasdaq’s rally was hampered by Apple Inc., AAPL -0.02% which fell 0.8%.
The Federal Open Market Committee stressed its commitment to low short-term interest rates well after bond purchases end altogether and added new language that it plans to maintain the target Fed funds rates “well past the time that the unemployment rate declines below 6.5%.”
Earlier, housing starts data showed construction of new homes soared to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.09 million in November in the fastest pace since February 2008, signaling that the housing market’s recovery is shaking off rising mortgage rates. The government reported surges in construction of both single-family homes and apartments.
Better-than-expected housing data sent the S&P 500 home builders index up 4.8%, as Lennar Corp. LEN +6.34% , D.R. Horton, Inc DHI -0.30% and PulteGroup, Inc PHM +2.16% were among the best-performing stocks on Wednesday.
In other markets:
- 10-year Treasury yields rose modestly, up 4 basis points to 2.89%
- Gold futures were volatile and settled $1,235 an ounce
- Crude oil futures rose to highest in more than a week.
- Stocks in Asia rose and the European stocks rebounded
“Essentially the Fed made a trade: it traded liquidity—or shaving off $10 billion a month—for a boost in confidence. Changing the unemployment expectations to 6.5% it committed to keeping low raters for longer,” he added.
- Comment : Joe Bell, senior equity analyst with Schaeffer’s Investment Research thinks markets are rewarding the clarity: “It is a good sign that markets are reacting positively to news that the economy is in a good shape and improving. The Fed’s decision is data driven, so if it decided to taper it is because it is confident about the recovery in the economy.”
- Wednesday’s movers & shakers: Lennar Corp. LEN +6.34% shares rose 6.3% after fiscal fourth-quarter profits and revenues beat estimates. Shares of Jabil Circuit, Inc JBL +2.04% fell 20.5% after earnings and outlook fell short of Wall Street’s expectations. Ford Motor Co shares slid 6.3% as the car maker lowered its 2014 outlook. Target Corp.TGT -0.47% shares rose 3.1% after the retailer’s chief executive, Gregg Steinhafel, said he was pleased with Target’s holiday performance and introduced a round of “last minute” sales. Shares in Apple Inc AAPL -0.02% dropped 0.8% hampering gains on the Nasdaq Composite. General Mills, Inc GIS -0.72% recovered after dropping more than 2% as second-quarter earnings disappointed.
