A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily, the combined Saturday and Sunday issues of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; and Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,922.02 up 14.08 or 0.11% from Thursday's close of 12,907.94. Sat. WSJ pB5 "Stocks lose steam but finish in the black" by Christian Berthelsen & Chris Dieterich says stocks hung on to book modest gains, though a fin'l industry group's ruling the Greece's debt restructuring constituted a de facto default undercut a stronger rise earlier in the day on upbeat jobs data. JPMorgan led the blue chips higher rising 59 cents.
Fin Times p13 "Midweek losses recouped as Lennar leads the pack" by Arash Massoudi says a mid week rally held into Fri as Wall St responded to economic data showing the US labor market had strengthened in Feb. JPMorgan gained 2%. Walmart was up 0.5%.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks boast modest gains, but NYSE shows stalling" by Paul Whitfield says stocks finished the week with small gains in mixed volume Fri although the NYSE composite showed stalling action. The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
Sat NYT pB6 "Shares rise on jobs report but end with slight gains" by AP says stocks closed modestly higher on Fri after the gov's monthly reort on employment bolstered hopes that the economic recovery was on track. The gains were tempered by news that a big debt write down by Greece could cause big losses for some banks.
As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.44 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.46 (year ago it was 14.56); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.39 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.79) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.52 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,707.38 up 1.87 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,705.51. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.91 up $0.06 from Thursday's average closing price of $56.85. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.80 (DD/HD)up $0.34 from Thursday's median closing price of $49.46. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $86.8 0+.09 0.1% 1,957,444 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.05 -0.01 0.12% 194,644,526 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $187 ($170,738 - $170,551).
MarketWatch Friday 3/9/12 4:48 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose for a third session Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq tallying a fourth week of gains, after another strong monthly jobs report illustrated the recovery continues. The U.S. jobs market generated 227,000 positions on the month, providing the economy with one of its best stretches of the recovery. “It’s very positive that we’ve had three up days in a row after our first triple-digit selloff (this year) on Tuesday. It takes the threat that (Tuesday) was the beginning of a correction phase off the table, perhaps,” said Hank Smith, chief investment officer at Haverford Investments. “The economy, while still growing at a below-average rate, is still improving,” said Smith of February’s jobs data. “The revisions up the prior two months were a very important part of this jobs report,” he added. Off 0.4% from last Friday’s close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.11% settled with a second weekly drop. The Dow rose 14.08 points, or 0.1%, to 12,922.02, with two-thirds of its 30 components gaining ground. ‘There is no investor that I know of that doesn’t believe Greece hasn’t defaulted on its debt.”Hank Smith, Haverford Investments Up for a fourth consecutive week, the S&P 500 SPX +0.36% climbed 4.96 points, or 0.4%, to 1,370.87, giving it a weekly rise of just under 0.1%.
Also pulling into positive terrain for a fourth straight week, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.60% gained 17.92 points, or 0.6%, to 2,988.34.
For every stock that fell, more than two rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where 719 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 3.6 billion. The U.S. dollar DXY +1.01% gained, especially against the euro EURUSD +0.34% , while bond prices fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR 0.00% used in determining the rate on mortgages and other consumer loans rising to 2.03%. Read more on bonds and read more on currencies. “The wild card here is the price of oil. If we have another spike upwards, that would have a much bigger impact on the consumer,” said Smith, who believes the recent escalation in gasoline prices had less of an impact on consumers who got a “real dividend from a mild winter, with heating bills dramatically down from where there were a year ago.”
Crude-oil futures CLJ2 +0.79% rose 82 cents, or 0.8%, to end at $107.40 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Read more on oil futures. Ahead of the opening bell, the Labor Department’s said nonfarm payrolls climbed by 227,000 last month, more than expectations. The agency also revised higher jobs growth for December and January. “It’s another confirming data point that the healing process is well under way. I think it points to stronger gains ahead,” Matthew Kaufler, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. “Confidence is getting restored. It’s fragile still, but less so than six months ago, or a year ago. The fear and uncertainty on the part of corporate America towards hiring and the future, and taking on incremental expense, is starting to abate,” Kaufler added. Stocks lost only a bit of steam after the International Swaps and Derivatives Association Inc., or ISDA, said a restructuring credit event had occurred with Greece’s use of collective-action clauses, or CACs, to amend the terms of Greece-issued bonds. The ISDA’s determination was not a surprise, and the losses investors were forced to take on under Greece’s use of CACs would trigger payouts on $3 billion of default insurance, also in line with market expectations. “There is no investor that I know of that doesn’t believe Greece hasn’t defaulted on its debt,” said Smith of the market’s tepid reaction. Paving the path toward a second rescue package, Greece confirmed a deal with its private creditors to reduce its public debt and avoid default, although concern about the euro zone isn’t expected to disappear. The action in Greece was largely priced into the equity market on Thursday, said Kaufler, who called the accomplishment “a first step on a journey toward restructuring and reform.” Greek leaders now must still “follow through on their promises, and their track record is a volatile one,” he added. Friday marked the third anniversary of the bull market. The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.36% is up 102% since closing at 676.53 on March 9, 2009, on the belief that the economy is healing after its worst hit since the Great Depression. “I think we were overdone three years ago when we hit bottom. The markets tend to overshoot in both directions,” said Kaufler.
