Post No. 1,526 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/7/12 and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings as of 3/7/12.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,252.76 up 58.66 or 0.44% from Wednesday's close of 13,194.1. For the year the Dow is up8.47 %. Of the 30 Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $206 +1.28 0.63% 3,610,377 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $9.24 +0.40 4.52% 485,674,335 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $110.03 -0.66 0.6% 8,881,276 NYSE and percentage-wise was Cisco 19.91 -0.285 1.41% 54,957,596 NASDAQ-GS.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks applaud strong data" by Chris Dieterich says stocks rose, pushing the S&P above 1400 for the 1st time 4 years after another round of solid domestic economic reports. Fin'l & ind'l stocks were the big gainers as Bank of America rose 40 cents, JPMorgan rose 1.12 to lead the blue chips. Cisco fell 29 cents after saying it would acquire NDS Group, a UK video software maker for $4 bil.

Fin Times p22 "Fin'l & Transport shares life S&P to 4 year high" by Arash Massoudi says the S&P hasn't been this high since June '08 & was buoyed by JPM's news earlier in the week about its dividend increase and Bank of America crossed $9 mark.

NYT pB7 "Shares continue surge as S&P breaks 1400" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Thurs sending the S&P above 1400 in almost 4 years.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks climb; Apple meets resistance" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted decent gains in mixed volume Thurs keeping intact the market's bullish tone as the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.83 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.77 (year ago it was 14.11); Friday's P/E estimate is 12.39 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.39 (year ago it was 12.42) and today's dividend yield is 2.47 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.48 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,751.07 up 7.74 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,743.33. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.37 up $0.26 from Wednesday's average closing price of $58.11. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.37 (DD/HD)up $0.30 from Wednesday's median closing price of $51.07. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $59.08 +0.13 0.22% 2,572,537 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.24 +0.40 4.52% 485,674,335 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $774 ($175,107 - $174,116).

MarketWatch Thursday 3/15/12 4:39 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose Thursday, lifting the S&P 500 index past 1,400 for the first time since June 2008, after another round of strong reports on jobless claims and manufacturing. “We had a treasure trove of economic news today, all of it good. Weekly claims were the best they’ve been in four years, and indicates the strength we’ve seen in the last six months is going to continue,” said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors Inc. The S&P 500 SPX +0.60% advanced 8.32 points, or 0.6%, to 1,402.60, crossing and closing above 1,400 for the first time since the index of large-cap stocks was coming down off a record high in October 2007. It’s still about 10% away from that all-time peak of 1,565.15. On Thursday, financials fed sector gains and utilities represented the only declining sector among 10. “When things are really good, it’s hard to stay bullish. This market has gone up pretty dramatically, so it feels like it’s gotten ahead of itself, but the reality is I’m not sure that it has,” said Sandy Lincoln, chief market strategist at BMO Asset Management. “I still find myself weighted more toward stocks than fixed income because the economic backdrop is better and the Federal Reserve is encouraging risk-taking.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.45% rose 58.66 points, or 0.4%, to 13,252.76, extending its winning run into a seventh session, its longest up streak since the eight-day period ending Feb. 9, 2011. Bank of America Corp. BAC +4.52% led blue-chip gains, while Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO -1.41% fell the most after the network-equipment maker said it would acquire NDS Group Ltd. for about $5 billion, including the taking on of debt. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.51% rose 15.64 points, or 0.5%, to 3,056.37. Read how Nasdaq has returned to 3,000 on half the volume. For every two shares falling, roughly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 844 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.2 billion. Nasdaq exchange volume was about 450 million. “The Fed’s financial repression does seem to be having some of the desired effects. They are basically saying we’re going to keep these yields very unattractive for a very long period of time,” a positive scenario for consumers and corporate refinancing, commented Lincoln. “It’s a huge factor in consumer cash flow, since about 80% of mortgage applications are in refinance,” allowing homeowners to substantially lower their monthly mortgage payments. On Thursday, Freddie Mac’s chief economist said rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages this week averaged 3.92%. “Before the recession, mortgage rates were over 6%. It’s a huge tailwind for these markets; the consumer has been able to pay down some debt and continue to buy a bottle of wine with a cork in it,” said Lincoln. Oil prices continued to slide, with crude futures for April delivery CLJ2 +0.04% losing 32 cents to end at $105.11 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Treasury prices were mixed, with yields on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR -0.04% at 2.279%. The Labor Department reported first-time claims for jobless benefits fell by 14,000 to 351,000 last week, returning to a four-year low. The New York Federal Reserve’s gauge of manufacturing in the region in March climbed to 20.2 from 19.5 the month before, reaching a 21-month high in the most recent reading. In a separate report, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s business-condition index rose to 12.5 in March from 10.2 last month. However, some of the underlying details of the regional surveys were mixed, with new orders lower in both. “While the Philly and New York manufacturing surveys rose to multimonth highs, the components were very mixed and thus more manufacturing data in other regions of the country need to be seen to draw more specific conclusions about growth,” said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. But BMO Asset Management’s Lincoln cautions against reading too much into surveys that can be “extraordinarily volatile month to month,” saying “the trend has been your friend on that stuff.”
