Post No. 1,535 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.

MarketWatch Wednesday 3/21/12 4:14 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed mostly lower Wednesday, with sentiment getting a bit of a dent from corporate reports from Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ -2.17% and others, and some disappointment from a report on existing home sales. "It's mixed data, typical of the halting recovery we've been having. I don't think anyone expects a smooth ride at this stage," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager of the Federated Clover Small Value Fund, of the housing data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.35% ended down 45.57 points, or 0.4%, at 13,124.62, with H-P leading declines. The S&P 500 SPX -0.19% fell 2.63 points, or 0.2%, to 1,402.89, led by energy-share losses. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.04% rose 1.17 points, or 0.04%, to 3,075.32.

Fin Times p22 "Ind'l & energy sectors in the grip of BHP billiton bears" by Arash Massoudi says renewed concerns about China's economic outlook & disappointing domestic housing market data undermined the mood on Wall St & drove the S&P down from a near 4 year high. JPMorgan was up 0.4% on reports it will pay $150 mil to settle a lawsuit with 3 pension funds. Caterpillar led the Dow fallers on the back of market concerns over China. United Technologies fell 1.6%.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks fall in lower trade; nasdaq cuts loss to 0.1%" by Vic Reklaitis says stocks dropped Tues but trimmed losses & closed near session highs, the latest sign that sellers remain at bay. Tuesday's action was down in lower volume while the current outlook remains in a confirmed uptrend.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,740.14 down 9.14 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,749.28. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. MarketWatch Tuesday 3/20/12 5:05 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell Tuesday, with the S&P 500 Index retreating after a three-session advance that had the index near a four-year high. The market’s decline isn’t surprising, given “we had such an incredible run-up and were moving toward historic highs,” said Carol Pepper, chief executive of Pepper International, an investment-advisory firm in New York. ‘History will show Ben Bernanke did a good job.’ Carol Pepper, Pepper International
After falling nearly 116 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.52% closed down 68.94 points, or 0.5%, at 13,170.19, with heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. CAT +0.17% weighing the most, off 2.6%. Walt Disney Co. DIS -0.32% shares also weighed, down 0.5%, after the entertainment conglomerate said it expects science-fiction film “John Carter” to lose about $200 million. Outside the blue-chip benchmark, shares of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. LGF +3.27% rose 7.2% ahead of the company’s release of “The Hunger Games” movie. Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.20% led gains that included just eight of the Dow’s 30 components. The bank’s shares rose 2.9% after it said it would not issue more equity in a secondary offering. The S&P 500 SPX -0.30% declined 4.23 points, or 0.3%, at 1,405.52. On Monday it had closed at its highest since May 2008 and also notched a new 52-week high. Among 10 industry groups, energy and industrial stocks slipped the most on Tuesday. Financials fared best. Barring a turn in fundamentals, Pepper is part of the camp that believes any pullback was unlikely to be significant, given that Wall Street’s advance so far this year caught many professionals off guard. “So a lot of hedge-fund managers are saying once a pullback comes, we’ll get in,” she added. Others offered a more bearish take. “If the S&P 500 should have a clear break of 1,390 in the next one to two days, the buy-the-dip crowd will head for the shelters and sellers can get the upper hand,” Elliot Spar, a market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus & Co., wrote in afternoon commentary. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -0.14% shed 4.17 points, or 0.1%, to 3,074.15, outperforming the Dow and S&P 500. Helped by a 3.7% lift in Amazon shares, the Nasdaq 100 NDX +0.16% bucked the broad down trend and ended 0.2% higher at 2,737.63. For every share advancing, less than two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where about 711 million shares traded hands. Composite volume was 3.7 billion. Oil prices fell, with crude futures CLJ2 -2.23% for April delivery down $2.48, or 2.3%, to settle at $105.61 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Equities and commodities around the globe fell after China raised fuel prices for a second time in less than six weeks, and an executive from mining company BHP Billiton Ltd. BHP -0.55% said that China’s demand for iron ore is flattening out. The U.S. Commerce Department reported housing starts fell last month while permits for future building rose to their highest level since October 2008. In the afternoon, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gave the first of four lectures at George Washington University on the history of the central bank, continuing his effort to shed light on the workings of the Fed at a time when both he and the Fed are under political attack. “With the election season, Bernanke-bashing is in season,” said Pepper, who noted that most people don’t realize the Fed “made a tidy sum” for taxpayers in its purchases of mortgage-backed bonds and other programs. “What he’s doing is a little more difficult for the average person to understand, but unemployment rates are going down, and we didn’t have a massive collapse of all our banks. History will show Ben Bernanke did a good job,” she commented.
