Post No. 1,537 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,046.14 down 78.48 or 0.06% from Wednesday's close of 13,124.62. Of the 30 Dow components 8 gained and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $205.62 +0.93 0.45% 2,871,364 NYSE and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble PG $67.52 +0.32 0.48% 7,224,332 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $106.44 -2.56 2.35% 8,728,799 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.69 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.74 (year ago it was 14.60); today's P/E estimate is 12.83 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.83 (year ago it was 12.29) and today's dividend yield is 2.49 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.48 (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,723.78 down 10.36 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,734.14. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.46 down $0.34 from Wednesday's average closing price of $57.80. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.98 (DD/HD) down $0.22 from Wednesday's median closing price of $51.20. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $57.97 -0.54 0.92% 2,659,253 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.595 -0.225 2.29% 249,636,861 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,036 ($173,414 - $172,378).

MarketWatch Thursday 3/22/12 3:03 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell Thursday, with the S&P 500 extending losses into a third session, with market watchers largely chalking up the decline to the market’s double-digit rise in the first quarter. “This market is just taking a breather. The last few days don’t really look fundamentally driven, but is instead relatively low-volume profit taking during spring break,” said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis. “I’d be surprised to see a 19% pullback like last year. We’re really pulled back very little so far for the kind of market we’ve had, this market has been quite resilient,” Freeman added. Up 6.7% for the year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.60% on Thursday fell 84.69 points, or 0.7%, to 13,039.90, with 23 of its 30 components in the red, led by aluminium producer Alcoa Inc. and heavy-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. CAT -2.36% Lightly cutting into its near 11% climb so far for 2012, the S&P 500 Index SPX -0.72% shed 10.89 points, or 0.8%, to 1,392, with energy and industrials hardest hit and consumer staples the best performer among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.39% declined 14.65 points, or 0.5%, to 3,060.67, up more than 17% since the end of 2011.
Decliners outpaced advancers roughly 3-to-1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where 454 million shares traded as of 2:55 p.m. Eastern. The dollar DXY +0.14% rose against other currencies including the euro, while dollar-denominated commodities fell. Crude-oil futures CLK2 -1.68% fell $1.92 to settle at $105.35 a barrel and gold futures GCJ2 -0.41% $7.80 to a nine-week low of $1,642.50 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Treasury prices rose, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR -0.56% — used in determining mortgage rates and other consumer loans — falling to 2.277%. Another positive report on the American labor market failed to stem Wall Street’s losses, with the Labor Department reporting applications for jobless benefits last week declined to a four-year low. But analysts largely viewed Wall Street’s decline as more to do with quarter-end window dressing than economic data. “The last couple of days being down is a combination of investors, retail and institutional alike, taking some profits. The quarter-end is upon us, so if you’re up 11% and higher, that’s a good a start to the year,” said Mark Martiak, senior wealth strategist at Premier/First Allied Securities.
“The economic data continue to trend well; a lot of that has to do with favorable Obama administration policies, and inflation has been held in check,” said Martiak. The improving jobs picture was a large factor in the Conference Board’s 0.7% rise in February in its index of leading economic indicators. Read about the positive outlook of general economic activity in first half of 2012. Equities around the globe were hit after weaker-than-expected readings on manufacturing activity in France and Germany. And a March survey found new factory orders at a four-month low in China.
